Vonage —

We have tried many different companies over the years and have tried 3 different VOIP companies.  Vonage was the worst of the worst.  First of all, we switched because they offered a better pricing plan and more features but it wasn't worth the savings.  While we all have cell phones, I give out the home number often for the kids activities, work contacts that would be nonemergency etc.  While not emergency these are still important calls.  We already had a phone number and wanted to port it over...Vonage said they could do that and signed us up.  We got the package and started the process of setting it up and found out we did not have the same phone number...they had assigned a new one.  Major inconvenience but ok...we started calling everyone and letting them know we had a new number.   At first, Vonage seemed good...we got the unlimited plan which was very inexpensive and we were happy for a little over a month.  I started getting people showing up at my door at that point saying I've been trying to call you but it just keeps ringing or it rings and then drops the call.  People who had my cell number would call and say they had been trying to get me at home all day and were having the same problems.   We verified that everyone was using the correct phone number, that it wasn't their service that was a problem etc and both called and emailed Vonage who said basically "it isn't us....it's your broadband"   Hubby works in IT so he checked everything and found no problems.  We let Vonage know and still they insisted it wasn't their problem.  We then called our broadband provider and had them come out and do all the checks and fax Vonage a report of their findings...everything was great on their part.  Vonage then said that it wasn't their fault and that nobody was calling us when I pointed out the drop in calls....there was literally a month where there were NO incoming calls comapred to about 600 incoming the month before.  After many many phone calls to Vonage and having them tell me that it wasn't their fault, I cancelled.  They hit me with fees which I refused to pay and filed a BBB report against them.  They agreed to waive the fee and refund the money for the months that we could not get incoming calls but claimed that this was only to satisfy the customer, still insisting there was nothing wrong on their end.
I know some people have Vonage and haven't had any problems but I cannot recommend it to someone knowing that this company does not take responsibilty for themselves, their service or their equipment.  To me, Vonage is not worth the savings.
