My 2002 Passat hasn't been trouble free, but compares well to a Japanese make that I had a few years back. Smooth, responsive engine (2.8V-6) that gets decent mileage (18 town / 28 hwy) and has been reliable. Changed the belts, water pump, plugs, wires at 110,000 and had to change both front CV axles at 105,000. Brakes wear very well for here in the hills of western PA. Seats are comfortable. Got great tire mileage, seems to stay in alignment very well.
On the negative side, don't expect the A/C to cool things down much if it's above 85 and sunny outside. Some of the usual German electrical problems cropped up - headlights (and all other lights) burn out quick, and had to have several switches changed out. Also, it is expensive to repair unless you find a good VW / Audi mechanic and don't have to take it back to the dealer.
Had a good enough experience that I leased a 2008 Passat wagon with the 2.0 Turbo in it and am impressed with it so far. It feels lighter and doesn't have the same solid road feel of my 2002, but gets better mileage and is just as powerful with loads of room.
