To use the Visual Dictionary website, you can type in a word in the index box, or you can search through the categories on the home page. Currently, there are over 15 theme categories, including Astronomy, Plants & Gardening, Human Being, House, Science, and much more. These themes contain more than 6,000 images, such as the inner workings of a toilet, human anatomy, the structure of a pyramid, and a nuclear generating station, to name just a few.
The high point of the site, in my opinion, is the diversity of themes covered. The downside of the site is that they need to greatly expand the number of themes and images. Even though 6,000 images sounds like a huge number, once you browse through the site you begin to understand the need for more entries.
I highly recommend the Merriam-Webster Visual Dictionary as a bookmark-worthy site to add to your list of reference destinations. As the site grows and expands, it will become more useful to help you identify that thingamajiggy that needs repair.
