Victorinox "Super Tinker" Swiss Army Knife —

We carry many - what I consider crucial - tools on our backpacks. Most of them are on my husband's as is the Swiss Army Knife made by Victorinox.

The Swiss Army knives have lots of different names. One way to decipher what you want is by number of blades and what the blades do. You can find the Victorinox Swiss Army Super Tinker Pocket Tool for as low as $20.00 on Amazon. You will see many that look ergonomically friendly i.e. they are contoured. The Super Tinker is not. It has flat sides and measures 3 1/2 inches long and about 1 inch wide. It weighs in the 3 pound range.

  • Although the Tinker has a key chain you will not be buying it for that use. It is much too heavy. We put it on a hook on our backpack where my husband doesn't feel it at all.
  • We have a 2 1/2 size large blade. Since we only use this for times outdoors I'll give you an idea of what it can do while hiking, biking, or picniking. We have cut cheese with the large blade. We have also used it to cut twigs (on the ground only) so we don't get our hands messy when starting a campfire (ok an oxymoron but true).
  • There is something called a reamer with a sewing eye. We have never used this tool and if I had better connectivity I would look up the definition!
  •   The Victorinox Swiss Army Super Tinker Pocket Tool has a small blade that I have used to open the plastic packaging of our "to go" toilet paper and other hard to open items.
  • We have a can opener which we also have never used but others have said it works. There is a small screwdriver which my husband recently used on an old pair of eyeglasses I wear while watching tv.
  •   The Swiss Army Super Tinker Pocket Tool has a small Phillips screwdriver. I don't ever recall using this while outdoors but recently my husband had to unscrew a small nail in a piece of electronics and was able to use it.
  • We use the bottle opener a lot and I think that is self explanatory.
  • The large screwdriver with a wire stripper has been used around our RV when we can't find our regular one. .
  •   The Swiss Army Super Tinker Pocket Tool has a toothpick which is pulled out of the unit.
  • There are tweezers which have come in handy to pull out a piece of wood as long as it isn't in too deep.
  •   I love the scissors which have cut everything from hangnails to clothes.
  •   There is a hook and corkscrew.

The Swiss Army Super Tinker Pocket Tool has a lifetime warranty.

The only problem I've had is pulling out the tools. Perhaps it is my fingers, the tools need to be greased, or since we only use it seasonally they don't get much use.

I remember having one of these in my pocket just after 9/11, forgetting I was carrying it, and walking through security at the Boise airport. Needless to say, I didn't have it after that. Such ado!
