Humane for mice, heart attack inducing for me. *shudder*
4 star rating

a pet owner, still looking for a better way, freaked out by mice dead OR alive, humane, terrified of mice, not a believer in killing animals
Pros

affordable, no posion or chemicals, safe around pets and kids, can release mice live, they work as intended, humane if released quickly

Cons
mice could die in there, you have to PICK THE THING UP, You have to release mice, ugh, mice may not be dumb enough to go in, enjoy sharing a room with trapped mice!

Quick View: Anyone who knows me even a little bit knows that I am terrified of mice. Not just scared of but horrified, run like I am being chased by an axe murderer scared of them. Having said that, I don't like to kill them either. I mean, it really isn't their fault that I go into cardiac arrest when I think I hear or see one. My husband bought these traps knowing I won't use snap traps and knowing that our cat recently caught a mouse in our room. All I can say is there has to be a better way!

About Victor Live Catch Mouse Traps

Princess is my indoor cat who can find a mouse and catch it no matter how fast it is or how well hidden. I suppose I should be grateful...

Anyway, she caught a mouse in my bedroom the other night. I am sleeping on the couch again. We have an older house with little areas that mice apparently can get into. Now and then, one will get in and its demise is not pretty. Although I am horrified of mice, I don't want to kill them and Lord knows the idea of a snap trap makes me sick. My husband bought some Victor Live Catch Mouse Traps as a compromise.

These traps are like little plastic houses. The mouse can go in via a swinging door but the door cannot open once it is inside. It is essentially trapped in this little area with no way out until it dies or is freed. That is just so eww. But it's that or Princess will use it as a batting toy.

The traps come two to a pack and have no poison or chemicals in them. My husband did the cliche thing and put pieces of cheese in the back of the traps and then put the traps behind stuff on our room so I wouldn't know if a mouse got into one. I'll cut to the chase. It was a rainy night and I was sleeping peacefully when I heard something squeal. I jumped up and turned on the light. My husband told me to go back to sleep (as if) and he would take care of it. I knew it was a mouse and it was inside one of those traps. Now, it wasn't hurt, but probably ticked off, scared, and stuck in a very small space. He wanted out - as did I. I left the room running with blanket in hand to sleep on the couch. My husband carefully carried the trap downstairs (cue my hysterics) and let the mouse go outside.

All very valiant. But sick. I just can't stand the thought that one could get in and die there, trapped in darkness, starving. I don't like mice but sheesh. I am not one to get enjoyment from any animal's suffering. I suppose if you get at them fast and let them go, these are much more humane than any other trap. But the ones my husband placed in the basement are just sitting there. I certainly haven't looked to see if something is in them and if so, a mouse could be slowly dying. I can't stand it.

These traps work. They contain a mouse. They will not allow it to leave once it is inside. You can get the mouse out to let it free. (I don't know how though.). They are cheap, reusable, and safe around pets and kids. But I can't stand them. I didn't know mice squealed when they were trapped. I never want to hear that sound again.

Back to looking for a humane way to stay sane and keep mice far, far away.

My Viewpoint

Victor Live Catch Mouse Traps are a better alternative to traditional snap mouse traps by a long shot. For the mouse. For people, you have to be able to carry the thing out with the mouse inside and let it go. which I could never do without heavy tranquilizers. Also, if the mouse is trapped for too long, it will obviously die. That is just grody. Still, these do what they say IF a mouse is smart enough to go inside. They are safe around kids and pets. They don't hurt the mice. I guess, despite the fact that they make my skin crawl, they really are effective. 4 stars but know I don't think they are the answer, especially to bigger mice problems. I mean, you'd have to have dozens of these things all over and check them every day. Not for me. No way. Recommended for you. I am throwing mine out. Too scared of hearing another squeal.

Just think about it, you provided a gourmet last meal for the little critters before they went to the Great Cheese Wheel in the Sky. Believe me, mouse cookies are great and the kids get off on helping.

Send one in. I bet they at least play a scene from it. You could even tell them you're doing it in memory of that cat. : )

They BLOW UP! lol. That is a very unique solution! I just wish I had a solution for keeping them far away from me rather than having to chase them away or catch them. I don't get a LOT of mice but one is plenty. I remember my uncle taught me to squeeze my biceps muscle when a mosquito was on my arm and it couldn't get its stinger out and would explode. I did it once and felt awful even though I hate mosquitoes! I AM a softie. lol.

No. I should get out the old video tapes and watch them though. I had one cat (who passed away from old age) who was really crazy. he played ping pong and even watched TV and played with stuff on the TV screen. I really miss that cat!

Well they really ARE intruders. Ugh. They do carry around germs and stuff too. I don't really care what happens to them as long as they aren't near me!

OK softie....I worked in property management for a number of years, and my sources in the pest control industry have a mouse solution...MICE COOKIES...you take your very best sugar cookie recipe-reduce the sugar by half-triple the baking soda, and triple the vanilla extract (artificial is fine) bake as usual and then stash the cookies anywhere that you suspect mice...No harm to kids or dogs other than gas...however, mice have unique digestive systems that do not allow them to belch or well, you know....they go away in search of water, pass away of indigestion, and the baking soda dries them up so they don't rot and smell...

Did you ever send the video in? I would love to see it - sounds sooooo funny! : )

I know you would, I myself though have just never thought of them as anything but intruders into my space. I guess I should be more compassionate but old dogs just don't change much ;)

You mean like three fat, black, skinny legged sections? Like legs that are like eyelashes and fat bellies? Little heads and two fatter sections? Scurrying around, most of the time in droves, climbing up you and you think it's an itch and you realize it's an ANT? That kind of thing? (Bwahahhaaha)

Haha. I have my cats on video, one playing ping pong (very well too) and another doing some crazy walk across the top of the door only to realize there was no way down. It was funny. I had to save her or she would have jumped many feet down. I could never hold a camera when one was next to or around a mouse though! Ugh.

Certainly , if I thought anyone was in danger, the mouse would go one way or the other. I don't have small kids - 22 and 17 - and they're both used to mice running around their tents. UGH. But if I had babies in the house, I definitely would want to be sure they were as safe as possible by any means necessary.

Thanks for the chuckle, I really needed it because I woke up with so much pain in my lower back. You should get your cats on video. Then you could send them to Funniest Home Videos on ABC and funniest Pet videos on Animal Planet. How about putting their pics on your profile ? Just remembered - when Kevin was channel surfing earlier this morning, he stopped on an old "Tom & Jerry" cartoon in which the little mouse in the diaper made friends with Tom...your sleeping cat with mouse reminds me of that. So that one never chases them - only the other one? Really want to see those cats, Patty. : ) Catch you later - oops, just noticed a pun. hehehehe lol

In response to PattyTherre's comment from May 20, 2008 at 5:03PM:

I figure it is better to just do away with them if they come in my house. I couldn't live with myself if one of my grandbabies was harmed because I let one live to possibly infect one of my babies. I know animal rights people would call me cruel but I would rather be cruel to a mouse than to my own flesh n blood. ;)

There is no good solution to mice in the house. They need to step away from my doorstep or wherever they get in. That's the safest and least nerve wracking solution.

I feel the same way! My husband was camping in a tent and one ran across his face. THAT would kill me. I would have gone into cardiac arrest. It was running wildly all over the tent and jumping on him because it wanted to get out. That is the height of pure horror for me. EWWW.

I agree. It really isn't the mouse's fault for ending up where he is. I actually feel sorry for the mouse you let loose because he must have been terrified. And I hate mice! But would rather not kill anything if possible.

Your mice phobia very much resembles my ANT phobia! ICKKKK!

LoveisJoy wrote on May 16, 2008 at 11:29AM

OMG...I am practically hyperventillating and hysterically laughing at this review! I am TERRIFIED of mice, so I can totally relate to your predicament. I'm not bothered by bugs, spiders, snakes, worms or birds, but something about a rodent makes me violently ill. I don't know if it's worse to be in the house with a live one or to have to dispose of a caught one. When I was a kid, a rat once ran across my feet, and I've never been the same since. :)

Luvs2ShopAlot wrote on May 16, 2008 at 8:11AM

I used these before, about 18 or 20 years ago. It did take a while for the mouse to actually get caught in it but when it finally did, I drove it to a field and set it free. After being in that tiny space all night and probably being quite upset, it was all wet and sweaty when it scampered off. I did feel MUCH better about not killing it because as the previous poster said, it is not the mouse's fault for being where it is. It is only an animal, and not that smart of one at that. . . I agree with her four star rating.

I can honestly say no mouse has ever left this house breathing...lol When I think of all the diseases they can carry I lose any thought of letting them go alive. ;)

My husband let the mouse go way back in the woods well behind our house. If it ends up back here, then it's on its own. I tried. I don't know why a mouse would come in now w
