Vicks VapoRub —

My family has always used Vicks VapoRub. We're originally from the mountains where you always try home remedies first - unless you're fixing to die on the spot. So, VapoRub is a staple in the medicine cabinet. It sits right there with the Calomine Lotion and BenGay. It never seems to run out either which is a good thing. I think I've had two bottles and one greaseless squeeze tube over my grown-up lifetime. I like the greaseless version, but it does seem like the old type works better.

Vicks VapoRub is a thin, greasy cream that is rubbed on the chest, across the neck and can also be put on other body parties for aches and pains. The dad person said that it helps to put this up your nose if you're stopped up. My family never did that. I tried that. Burn city! Seriously, it felt like I would think BenGay might feel if put up a nose. Not good. In fact, it says not to put this in your nose. Duh. I never read the container. Perhaps they have tougher noses in Oklahoma. Whatever the case, I do not suggest Vicks VapoRub in your nose or close to any sensitive body areas.

When I'm stopped up or my chest feels tight, I take a hot shower (to open the pores) and rub Vicks on my chest and neck. It starts working immediately as indicated by the smell. Oh that smell. Some people love it; some hate it. It's strong. It's familiar. I guess I like the smell of Vicks. I've been smelling it my entire life.

There have been many times where I thought I'd end up having to go see the doctor, used Vicks overnight and then felt much better. It does making breathing easier and loosens up chest congestion. It's a good old-fashioned remedy that gets handed down generation to generation. I remember Vicks from my great-grandmother, Grandma and from my mom's house. I'm sure my boys will remember Vicks too. I'd rather rub them up than pump them full of perscription drugs. This usually does the trick. If not, we head on to the doctor's office.

Hi Stephanie! I remember when my son was about 5 yrs old. I put on some Vics. He said, "Uhm. You sure smell good Mom." LOL. I wonder if he still thinks that's a great smell. He's 17 now - just this week.

This also brings back great memories of my grandma. She always rubbed it into your chest and throat, then took grandpas' handkerchief and tied it around my neck. I always woke up feeling better, but man, did I smell!

Hi Jo! Yes. Great stuff. Inexpensive. My mom used a cloth too. I'd forgotten about that.

What a memory this stuff brings back - Good memories because it works. I remember my mom putting it on me and then putting a cloth over it. I think I just rubbed it into my girls chest and on (not in) their noses when they were really stuffy. jo
