Venice Review Summary

Viewpoints reviewers say "If you go to Italy, you HAVE to go to Venice!"  This "city on stilts", located in Italy, is "a photographer or romantics dream". Those looking for cultural experiences are finding plenty to enjoy in Venice including great shopping, great food, friendly people, and beautiful sites.  The only minor complaints reviewers have is that Venice is crowded and a little bit confusing.  They warn that you should "be prepared to meander" since you likely will get lost on your first visit to the city.  Sound like your kind of place? Then read reviews of hotels in Venice and check out other destinations in Italy and Europe.  Can't make it to Venice yet?  Then try the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas for a miniaturized version of the city.

Venice, the ultimate city built upon fantasies.  Picture perfect.  Incredibly interesting.  A photographer or romantics dream.  Couples walking around who look like they have just stepped out of a Fellini movie.  Stodgy older men wearing cashmere trenchcoats with receding hairlines and sunglasses...

Italy is a beautiful, amazing country and Venice is no exception.  Granted, it rained the whole day I was there.  But the museums were amazing and it was beautiful.  My only complaint was how difficult it was to get there.  The Italian's can't organize anything.

I have been to Venice four times, and it is a wonderful place to visit.  The best part is just wandering around and finding beautiful canals everywhere.  The further you get off the tourist paths, the more interesting places you can find.  You will get lost, but enjoy it!

A visit to Piazza San Marco (St. Mark's Square) is a great way to start a trip.  The people holding the pigeons is a little gross, but the atmosphere is wonderful.  If you have lots of money, it is probably nice to sit in the square and people watch (sitting will probably cost you 20 euros for one person).  Basilica di San...

Although Venice has a lot of history to offer, I recommend that you absorb this history in the off season. However, it seems that Venice floods in the off season, so I can't really think of a good time to go. When I went, it was like a day at Disneyland - too many people and too little space. I think there were actually more tourists than there were Venetians. In fact, there were too many tourists to really take in the romance and the atmosphere of the city. It might not have helped that, at the time I went, there was an ongoing strike amongst the city's trash collectors, so there were piles of... review »

PLEASANTLY SURPRISED!

Upon my mother's insistence, I reluctantly scheduled Venice into our trip this past summer but now it ranks the top of my list of favourite European cities!  By the end of our visit, I felt that the 3 days/2 nights that we spent there was not enough.

We travelled as a family of four, including my two school-age children.  It was a challenge finding reasonably-priced accomodation with Quad rooms that could fit the four of us together but I finally did at US$250 per night (that's cheap for a European city Quad room!).  The nice thing about tiny Venice is that every accomodation...

I got to Venice after a number of other European cities armed with a Eurailpass and only a few bags. The trip into the city was amazing, as gondoliers glided past the train. Most of the time my sister and I were in Venice it poured. I was in a foul mood from travel and bad weather, but I'm so glad I made it to Venice. It is so special. I recall walking the tiny streets, over little bridges, winding around waterways, people selling knock-off luggage and bags on the streets, eating gelato, looking at the gilded walls of old churches. I would recommend the Peggy Guggenheim collection and a trip...

I would reccommend Venice to everyone, it was better than in all the pictures, easy to get around, I was nervous before going about the maze of side alleys and traveling on thevaporettos - just like a bus or subway.  the food was fantastic, all the designer stores were amazing, I loved the Murano glass makers, have enough glass for years now, everyone loves the Murano glass ring and it was only 10 euros.  I had to have a real masque, cost almost as much to ship it home as the price itself but it's one of those things you will always remember  we took a side trip by train to Verona, saw Juliet's...

Venice. Venice. Venice.  It was more than I ever thought it would be.  A friend and I travelled with a tour group and we were let loose in Venice for a whole day.  I was worried we would run out of things to do before our group met to go back to the hotel.  Wow, was I wrong!  Time flew by and I ended up wanting more. It was breathtaking.  We wondered through canal after canal.  I didn't know where we were half the time, but that is when you stumble across the best things.  Small shops that arent tourist based and real venetian goods, not trinkets.  I loved Venice and I have missed it every... review »

If you love theater, masks and art, Venice is the best place to go. Beautiful site-seeing, gorgeous gondoles, perfect for romantic trip as well as to learn history of this one of the oldest cities in Europe and the world. Great food and delicious wine. The unique Venice activities you'll discover during a walk around town are plentiful. The now-famous watery villages on rafts of wooden posts driven into the soil, laid the foundations for the floating palaces of today.

If there was a place in the world I would reccommend you to go to it would be Venice. Venice is fantastic, it is very easy to get around, traveling on thevaporettos is just like taking a subway. Italian food is the best, shopping is great and inexpensive, specially everything made of Murano glass. If you can afford it, take a gondola ride it is worth every euro you pay for it. Would go to Venice over and over again!

Venice, even for a non-Italian is a wonderful experience. It was the second city of five that I went to in Italy and probably my favorite. It is really easy to get around, with the water buses and cabs, and you could walk around the whole city if you chose to. It is beautiful, with amazing architecture and canals. It is definitely an old city, but it is slowly adding modernizations behind that gorgeous architecture.

I lived in Italy for 6 months, and this was my favorite city.  It is absolutely beautiful.  Carnaval was incredible there.  I met some of the most amazing people from all over the world.  Everything looks completely different after Carnaval is over though.

The only downfall is that it is a little touristy.  But I got passed it, and so will you.

My husband and I were married just outside of Venice in Verona, Italy.  I adore Venice - the shopping, food, and sight-seeing are amazing.  I am often frustrated by how crowded it is, though, even in the "off-season."  Also, I am orientation-challenged, and it is very easy to get lost.  Be prepared to meander!

Absolutely beautiful, there's no place like it in the world. But, with more dead ins than any place else make sure you bring a good map and a good tour guide or Fodors with you!

What a place.  Venice is one of those cities that one must see in a lifetime.  You best be quick about it too, it is said it will be useless and underwater in 30-50 years.  I loved wandering and popping my head into little shops, also seeing some quasi-residential areas.  It was a little cold when I went, but still a wonderful experience.  O, and they are banning the feeding of the pidgeons in St. Mark's square soon, so best be hurrying if you want to feed these lil' critters.  I was skeptical at first, but it is something you have to do when you travel here.  Happy trails :)
