PLEASANTLY SURPRISED!

Upon my mother's insistence, I reluctantly scheduled Venice into our trip this past summer but now it ranks the top of my list of favourite European cities!  By the end of our visit, I felt that the 3 days/2 nights that we spent there was not enough.

We travelled as a family of four, including my two school-age children.  It was a challenge finding reasonably-priced accomodation with Quad rooms that could fit the four of us together but I finally did at US$250 per night (that's cheap for a European city Quad room!).  The nice thing about tiny Venice is that every accomodation is centrally located, IF you make sure that the hotel is located within "central" Venice proper, and not on Lido or elsewhere that claims to be a Venice hotel.

St. Mark's Square, though a must-see, is too touristy.  If it rains, be prepared to wade in ankle-deep water.  Unless you're willing to fork out US$12 for a cup of coffee or hot chocolate (and ambiance!) at one of the cafes located at St. Mark's, save your thirst and hunger for elsewhere.  Don't miss the Correo Museum, at which you can buy ticket combos for the Correo and the Doge's Palace, whose ticket line can be daunting depending on the time of year.

Boat rides to Burano (lace) and Murano (glass) are expensive.  Well, actually, just about anything in Venice is expensive so be prepared to spend and just live it up for the moment!
