I got to Venice after a number of other European cities armed with a Eurailpass and only a few bags. The trip into the city was amazing, as gondoliers glided past the train. Most of the time my sister and I were in Venice it poured. I was in a foul mood from travel and bad weather, but I'm so glad I made it to Venice. It is so special. I recall walking the tiny streets, over little bridges, winding around waterways, people selling knock-off luggage and bags on the streets, eating gelato, looking at the gilded walls of old churches. I would recommend the Peggy Guggenheim collection and a trip to Murano, the home of gorgeous Venetian glass. The taxi boats are one of the craziest things I've ever seen, and add to the surreal quality of Venice. I wish I could recall the name of the restaurant where I had a huge plate of linguini bathed in squid ink. It may sound gross, but it was one of the most memorable meals of my life, and remarkably delicious. No Italian trip is complete without a stop in Venice.
