When I lived overseas, Vanity Fair was a treat, as it cost anywhere from $12-18 per issue. Yes, you read that right. At that cost, I used to treat ymself to VF about two ro three times a year, and I held on to those issues as if they were valuable books.
Once we moved to the USA (my native country), we got a subscription, which comes out to only $1 an issue. Remarkable! I no longer have to wait for the annual Hollywood issue to get my fix; it's delivered to my mailbox once a month. I'm overjoyed. It's a great magazine: full of wit and style, great writing, and gorgeous photos of beautiful people. I especially love Annie Leibowitz' photography.
My only complaints about VF are:
Too many ads! At least the first 20 pages are devoted to advertising. This month's issue has 66 pages of ads before getting to any real material. 66 pages!
A zillion perfume samples. What's that about? It's kind of disgusting, especially when all the smells combine.
If not for these annoyances, it'd be a perfect magazine. As it is, it's good enough that I can bypass these inconveniences, and I always look forward to sitting down with my copy of VF and reading Dunne's crime file, looking at the photo spreads, and finding out what's going on in my beloved NYC. The next best thing to being there.
