I had been hearing bad reviews on Vacancy and it made me a little upset. Kate Beckinsale and Luke Wilson in a horror thriller movie, how can it be bad? I tackled my suspicions and saw the movie. I laughed a few times during the beginning but as the movie progressed, I was on the edge of my seat.

Plot: When a young couple's car breaks down in the middle of nowhere, they are forced to walk back to the car garage they saw on the way. They find out the garage is closed but is located conveniently next to a grungy motel. After renting a room for the night, they settle in and put a video on that was just lying on top of the VCR. What they see is a snuff film recorded in the very room they are in. They must find a way to escape before they become the stars of the next snuff film.

I won't lie. I had my suspicions about how good Luke Wilson would be in this type of movie. I dismissed Kate Beckinsale because I knew she was gonna be good, she's a fantastic actress. I'm pleasantly surprised though, at how convincing Luke Wilson was. He had such real emotions on screen. it was a total change from how he acted in Old School or My Super Ex-Girlfriend. Frank Whaley, who plays the psychotic voyeur motel owner, does a good job in his role, especially at the end. I don't normally like to talk about the endings of movies in my reviews but, the ending scene is so full of suspense and it gets to a point where you almost want cringe but, just as you do, it lightens up. I hope thats not giving anything away but it's a great scene. One last thing about Frank Whaley's character, he comes off a bit jokey but it doesn't hurt the film at all.

The cinematography and directing were spot on as well. I think directing was key in making Vacancy as good as it was. The special effects were good but not amazing although they didn't have to be in a suspense movie such as this. The masks the killers wear are extremely spooky looking.

I jumped 3 times during the movie, which is more than I usually do. Vacancy did a good job of pulling me into the story and keeping me with it. Not once did I get bored nor did I lose track of what was going on. Overall, this is a great movie that will you keep you in suspense till the very end.

Yea, I don't think it's fair to dismiss Luke Wilson out of hand...the guy can actually act...I always thought he did pretty well in Wed Anderson's quirky character films (Bottlerocket and The Royal Tennenbaums)
