VTech V.Smile TV Learning System —

The V-Smile by V-tech is an awesome game system for your little learners!

The V-smile is an educational video game sytem that plays solely the V-Smile cartridge learning games, as opposed to the traditional Playstation, Nintendo and X-Box systems.

The console is orange and purple, has a small case for cartridge storage right on it (though it can hold no more than 6-8 of them), and plugs right into the the back of your tv or sound system. The hand controller has a large joystick with a large orange button and 4 primary colored buttons. The console is powered by 3 C-batteries.

I prefer my child having fun while learning something than playing mindless games. Don't get me wrong, E-rated video games are good for teaching children hand eye coordination and are okay some of the time. However, my young son has a blast on the V-Smile, playing his choice from Bob the Builder, Elmo, Cars, Nemo, Thomas and many more. The large joystick and buttons make the controller easy for your child to handle and understand. The games are very much age appropriate and have the characters that children love. The plus, for me, is the education factor. You can never get your child learning too young and this video game system is an entertaining way to exercise their minds!

The down side is that you need rechargeable batteries or purchase an A/C adaptor, otherwise you'll be going through C-batteries like they're toilet paper.

The games are sold separately at around $19.99, which you might consider pricey, but PS, Nintendo and X-box games often cost more than that, so I think the prices are reasonable.

I've heard that the V-Smile is not durable, but we've had ours for over 2 years and the system still runs very well, so I don't know what others are doing with the console, but so long as you're as careful with the V-Smile as you are with any other game sytem, it should last.

In response to GigiandAdonai's comment from Nov 5, 2008 at 6:20PM:

We don't have the Leapster game system. Although, it appears, in my mind, to be better than V-Smile, but we haven't tried it yet. The V-Smile was the fad at the time. Leapster seems to be more high techie, to me, though.

My younger niece and nephews went through the V-Tech stage and now I have friends that are going through the Leapster stage. Any comparisons between the two?

I just read a few of the othe reviews on the V-Smile. I just wonder what others were doing with the console, because my son's runs well and is very durable!

Excellent review! Oddly, I had this item on my list of things to review. Who said they weren't durable? I think they're made pretty darn good! ;-)
