VTech Sit to Stand Alphabet Train —

When you first look at the VTech Sit to Stand Alphabet Train, it doesn't look like anything different than the other "Sit to Stand" toys. It's cute and has lights/music, but from first glance, the only thing most see is the price tag. At $50 (or around there), it's pretty pricey.

It's not often that I say this, but for a kids toy, it's well worth the money.

First, a look at the toy

The train is simply made. There is the "locomative" part, which includes a slot where kids can put in blocks that will automatically fall behind the train. It also has a paino key board, interactive book, places to place coordinate blocks by the book and a circus elephant that will play "The Elephant Walk" when touched.

The locomative can be used seperately as a walker, or combined with a lower caboose, where kids can sit and the blocks can fall when placed in the slide.

Our Experience

When our 13 month daughter opened it up, the Christmas opening stopped. Our 3-year old wanted to get in on the action, and our daughter was just as excited. After getting it set up (it takes about 5 minutes), they were on a roll.

Within 10-15 minutes, our daughter was pushing it across the room. By the end of the vacation, she had mastered the art of putting the blocks into it's "fun slide", and our son had figured out how to match the letters on the blocks to the letters on the book, located on the side of the train.

Even today, nearly four months after it was received, it's a favorite toy. This is the first and only toy both kids will happily play with at the same time. It grows with the child - as her skills advance, the toy just keeps being entertaining!

The Flaws/Things to Watch For

Of course, nothing is just perfect. Sad, I know. To keep the caboose attached, there is a pretty fancy latching system. To unlatch it, it requires a bit of patience and skill. You'll have to push the knob in and up, which for some people seems hard to master.

Also, watch out for stepping on the blocks. From experience, they don't feel that great! ;-)

Final Thoughts

If you have the money and a young child, this is a great toy to invest in. Since it lasts for so long, it's the toy that just keeps giving. The best part? There's a sleep timer, meaning if it's not touched for 45 seconds, it shuts off.
