Well after 2 teens abused the last Vtech phone and I had to bury it in a quiet ceremony, I needed a replacement. So while picking up some groceries I also picked up a new phone. My last one was a 900mhz system (yeah I know it was ancient but it worked...lol) The only thing wrong was the battery had died and I no longer was able to find a replacement battery. Anyway I looked at all the choices and since my phone still works, I was only looking for something the kids could use.

I had a mind blowing selection from which to choose...from single handsets to 4 in a bundle but I only needed 2 (one for each kid) and that narrowed my choice to only 2 brands. One was the Vtech and the other a Panasonic, since my previous Vtech had served me well for 5 years I opted for it.

Vtech Model CS5111-2

Having a big yard usually means not being able to take the phone outside with you, at least not too far anyway. While I normally rely on my cell phone out in the yard I decided to give this one the ultimate test. From where the base is plugged in the kitchen it is roughly 230 feet (30 feet of that being the house) to my wood shed. With my old Vtech (a 2.4ghz.) I started getting cracking and what not by the pool shed. Now I can sit inside the wood shed and have no problems.

I also took it inside my garage and closed the door and while I got a loss of signal due to my fluorescent lights, this new phone worked great. Same thing when I took a walk down the street, I got good signal all the way to the corner (about 500 feet) I must say that I am very pleased and it was under $30 to boot.

Features

5.8ghz enhanced technology
2 hand sets with charging base (only one needs too be plugged into phone line)
Caller ID - Stores last 45 calls
Speed Dial - Holds 9 numbers
Name and number directory - stores 20
Any key answer - for us fumble fingers...lol
Handset volume control
Backlit display
Trilingual (English, French and Spanish)
Selectable ring tone - 4
WiFi friendly - It won't interfere with your WiFi devices
Handset locater - push button on base and it rings so you can find it
Transfer a call to the other handset
In use light on the main phone base

My favorite one though is the ability to transfer a call to the other handset!! Because it is never for me and with this phone...I answer it and then I push a button and it rings to the other phone at the other end of the house! No more getting up and taking the phone to the kids...Nope not anymore!!!!

Bottom Line

This phone is light weight and feels good in my hand and costs half what the old one did and has 2 handsets to boot. It has great features and a nice range and all for less than $30, who says new technology has to rob you blind. Plus my daughter has a habit of forgetting where she left the phone, so the handset pager has come in very handy.

It may not be a fancy phone with an answering machine (the next model up has it though) or a lot of fancy features but it gets the job done and that's what counts in my book. Plus the one feature I failed to mention above may just be one you like as much as I do. Only one handset can be used at a time, so no more having someone pick up and interrupt or ease drop on you while you're talking...lol

Our last phones were V-Tech and they were great. You can't go wrong in my opinion.

You're absolutely right Laurie.....there are so many to choose from and many are not worth the parts they are made from. That's why I tend to stick with a brand I know or someone I know has had good luck with....;)

It's really difficult to find a good cordless phone these days.

LisaCarey wrote on Nov 11, 2008 at 3:39PM

Like you, I have to buy one thing for me and one thing for the teens to use. Just make sure they can't go too far with the cordless. :->

I saved my Vtech in hopes I do find a battery...that old thing just had a good feel to it....;)

AmyA wrote on Nov 8, 2008 at 9:42AM

How did you know my phone was on the fritz and need a new one...might do the one step up with the answering machine since mine has never worked (sometimes it's a blessing).
I didn't know phones could lose a signal because of the lights...cool tip.

GigiandAdonai wrote on Nov 7, 2008 at 11:39AM

This sounds like a great phone. I'm going to save it as a favorite because I have had the same Uniden (love it) for about 7 years and I fear when the battery dies I won't be able to replace it either.

HEY, RON! How's my bud doing? Gee, does this sound like a great gadget or what! Glad to see you back!
