Uvex Bionic Shield —

If you have ever watched New Yankee Workshop you will have been warned by Norm Abrams to always wear eye protection. When I work at my lathe I add full face protection to this warning. This same additional protection is also important for welders.

The Uvex Bionic Face Shield gives me this added safety when I turn on my lathe. Although this one is pretty new, there is still a scratch on the shield that could have been a cut on my face from a piece of wood that flew off a fast turning chunk of wood. A face shield I had used in my previous workshop had enough dings and scratches that I would have looked a little like Frankenstein's monster if I had not worn it regularly.

The Bionic Shield is a quality piece of secondary protection for your face. They recommend you still wear safety goggles for primary eye protection. Uvex claims that the headband with a soft pad at the back has 2,784 possible position for a perfect fit. It holds the selected position each time you slide it on. The clear plastic slips easily in and out of the strong but lightweight rim for easy replacement if you do get it scratched up so it is hard to see through the clear plastic. There is also good protection for the front top of your head. They even have a separate adapter if you want to wear a hard hat. For welding there are a couple of coated lenses for infrared protection.

I find it comfortable to wear with plenty of room between it and my face for safety glasses and even a respirator for dusty jobs like sanding. I have had no trouble with it fogging and I like that the shield flips up out of the way since the air does get a little warm and stale when breathing under it.

This is reasonably priced safety device that should hang in every shop.

Ouch! My husband would have had many serious accidents without proper head and eye protection. Even when he works at home, he is careful to protect himself because he saw way too many welding and other types of accidents at work.

I have a small hook shaped scar under my eye from not having full face protection just using a drill press. The piece hit my safety goggles and deflected down or it would have been ny eye with the scar.

My husband was a welder for many years and thankfully always wore a helmet and eye protection. He used to have little burn holes all over his clothes. Scary that some people do woodworking and welding without proper face protection.
