University of Wisconsin-Madison —
Coming from MN, going to school in Wisconsin was a perfect fit. It was cheap enough with reciprpocity, and I was the perfect distance from home, about 4 hours so I wansn't there every weekend, but able to easily go back for holidays. Although there are about 40,000 undergrads, campus isn't huge and you find yourself always running into people you know from class or that party last weekend. The classes can be larger (200) but the teachers are really good and many times willing to talk with students and answer any questions. Going through the science track, I noticed that there is a lot of exciting research going on and plenty of labs to join and get some hands on experience. UW has a lot of money and they use it well for the most part, bringing in the top technologies and visual aides for classrooms and research. Wisconsin is a big beer drinking state that loves their football. If this doesn't appeal to you, there are a couple alternatives, but you may find yourself at home alone on the weekends. A lot of students are known for working really hard in their classes during the week, then rewarding themselves on the weekends by partying even harder. The good thing about a big school is that there are a lot of different people and you are bound to find some with similar interests as you, through clubs or organizations. It is a great place to experience the college life and walk away with a well earned degree.
