University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill —

If you know anything about UNC Chapel Hill, you know there's a big rivalry with NC State. The schools are about a half hour apart. I was accepted at both but opted to go to State. My son goes to Chapel Hill.

Both are excellent state universities. It really boils down to the areas of interest. Since my son is more the liberal arts type, Chapel Hill was the better choice. So, I wave both flags now.

Actually I can say that I did go to UNC Chapel Hill. I took one class from NC State as an undergraduate with graduate students over at UNC. That was a good experience. I made an "A."

Chapel Hill has an excellent reputation, and it's hard to get in. It's a good idea to have a back up application. You'll need to be near the top of your class, have strong SAT scores and probably need some outside activities - sports, Scouts etc.

If you visit the campus, you'll see that's it's a beautiful campus. The main area is lush and green with many old buildings. They do have a lot of construction and buildings going up every time I'm there.

Chapel Hill is a smallish Southern town with lots of smaller shops across the road. The main street is Franklin St. There are many coffee shops and also small pubs.

On campus, there are loads of activities and clubs. Sports are also big on campus as most folks will know - Go Carolina Tarheels.

Classes do tend to be large especially during the first year. Freshmen generally have TAs teaching the entry level classes.

Since this is a state university, prices are very reasonable. They are also good about financial help. Acutally they're good at most everything at UNC. The process has been pretty painless - so far.

My son is enjoying UNC Chapel Hill. I'm quite comfortable with him being at one of the best state universities in the nation.

Hi Nikki - I really can't say. They look at a number of things. The SAT scores are pretty important. They also consider class rank. There's an essay. It's a combo of a variety of things. Apply early. Best of luck. It really is a great university.
