University of Michigan-Ann Arbor —

As a former college admission counselor, I am always interested in institutions of higher education; why people choose them and what they think about them.  With moving to a new city, I have this wonderful opportunity to talk to people and find out why they went to school where they did and how successful that education was.  So, sit back, relax, and find out what this former student of the University of Michigan has to say.

What degree if any did you earn or pursue? I earned a BA in English and a Secondary Teaching Certificate

What was your major? English

What were the top three reasons you chose to go to the University of Michigan? 1. I wanted a school with a great football team/school spirit 2. I wanted it to be highly competitive for admission 3. I loved the town where the school is located (Ann Arbor)

What other programs are of particular interest at this school? Its theatre/dance/music program is highly regarded. It also boasts great graduate level programs.

Did you live in a dorm; can you tell me what is dorm life like? How many to a room? I lived in a dorm my freshman year with one roommate. I was on a co-ed floor. Dorm life was fun, but I was glad to be out of there after one year.

Is the food in the cafeteria any good? Yes! I loved it.

Is the University of Michigan diverse? Very. I liked going to school with people with many different experiences.

Where there many opportunities for socialization? What were some of your favorites that are tried and true at the University of Michigan? The university is big, so there were interest groups for all types. During the fall, football Saturdays are the biggest tradition.

Were you involved in "Greek life?" If so what?Yes. I was a Tri-Delt.

What are some of the opportunities there, which many people may not know about unless you are local or attend the University of Michigan? Ann Arbor is a culturally rich town, with great shopping, restaurants, and events. In the summer there is a fun art fair.

What are a few of the extracurricular activities offered? Wow--you name it, they have it: sports, performing groups, activist groups, religious groups...etc.

Any special attributes, awards, affiliations, championships that you are aware of?Oh yes! The University of Michigan was the National Champs in football in '98 (97 season). Also, we have many Heisman winners, including Charles Woodson. We also had the Fab 5.

What is the student population at the University of Michigan? 25,000 undergrads; 35,00 with graduate students.

How would you rate this school on a scale of 1-5? A solid 5!!

My Viewpoint:  Many people are aware of the rich sports tradition available at the Univeristy of Michigan, and while I have no desire to live anywhere with that much snow and cold, those who do like it enjoy the city of Ann Arbor. This school is more than a strong sports tradition, but it also offers a wide range of educational, social and financial aid opportunities and an excellent preparation for a graduate education.  This person went on to achieve an M.A. from DePaul University and an M.Ed. from the U. of Illinois. Now if that isn't prep I don't know what is.  As a former English major and a die hard UT Football fan, I can appreciate the many outstanding and diverse opportunities available at the University of Michigan.

For a guide on choosing a college or university visit: A Complete Guide to College Admissions, which shares resources and information on not only how to choose your university or college but how to apply to and get into the school of your choice, and what are important things to look for.

If applying to graduate schools, you will also find this Nationwide Review of the Top Five Graduate Business Schools and Information on Kaplan Graduate School Test Prep and Admission, both written by a former business school professor and Kaplan instructor, helpful in making your graduate school choices.
