I just graduated after four years at UCSB, and while I have incredibly great memories, I know that this school is definitely not for everyone.  Successful UCSB students have incredible time management.  You need to know when to study and know when to party, and not succomb to the constant temptation of the non-academic surroundings.

Good luck!

UC Santa Barbara is a laidback school on the beach near santa barbara, ca.  Most students live off campus in isla vista, which is a local, somewhat grungy area filled primarily with students between the ages of 19-22.  There is a strong party atmosphere in Isla Vista, particularly around Halloween, but it leads to underage students not purchasing fake IDs ("there's no point") and a huge onset of non-alcoholic events on campus from the University.

It is a strong research school, and graduates include Jack Johnson.

Santa Barbara has a beautiful campus and it can get quite distracting at times. Although it does provide for a good setting if you need inspiration!  It is a party school.  Lots of social activities and events which can also be a distraction.

The education is probably not the best in the UC system but is a good foundation.  Like any public school, the classes can be big, professors can be stand-offish and it can be somewhat overwhelming.  The students are not as diverse as it could be.
