United Airlines Review Summary

United Airlines has earned a decent rating from Viewpoints members. The United Airlines Mileage Plus rewards program was a hit with our budget conscious travelers. Competative prices won even more favor from our reviewers, some who claim that United Airlines is “almost always the least expensive to fly.” Members who love to fly, however, complained of inadequate customer service who, among other things, are “not helpful to disabled individuals”. Bottom line: Our reviewers liked the rewards United Airlines offers, but felt that United needed to improve their customer service. Read what others say are the best airlines and worst airlines.

I recently had a roundtrip flight on United Airlines from Denver to Philadelphia with a layover at Chicago O'Hare Airport on both the outbound and return flights. Overall I was pleased with the service and would not mind using this airline again in the future.

The outbound flight from Denver departed...

I recently had to take my first trip out of town with the children by myself.  Without many choices available to us (it was due to a death in the family and short notice flights) I booked my flights through Priceline.com and ended up with a flight on United Airlines.

Arriving at 4:30 am at a Houston...

I've been a long time customer of United airlines.  I fly mostly Southwest, American and United, and I often fly United using a discounted "Friends and family" ticket through a friend who is employed there.

So for a recent trip to Hawaii with my parents and sister, I chose United because they had a nice price and the flight times worked out for us.

I had called the airline a few weeks earlier and requested sub-titled movies for the flight.  I was told that they have sub-titles on their longer flights.  So when we boarded, I asked the staff to make sure the sub-titles were on the movies.

Nope,...

The only real criteria for judging an air flight is did it get you where you wanted to go, and not fall from the sky.  If that works out OK, everything else is almost inconsequential.  But in the case of United, with their legendary non customer service and penchant for screwing up my travel schedule, I feel compelled to dive down to the 1 star rating.  I won't even dwell on the baggage issue, or the timeliness of flights, or the unbridled non enthusiasm of the in cabin flight attendants for the needs of the business, leisure, or family traveler.

I feel my review title sums my feelings up...

Last year I took a few trips here and there, kicking off with a flight out to California to visit my cousin in Eagle Rock (a suburb of L.A.).  I hadn't seen Melody in more than 50 years! Because I hadn't traveled in a long time and since this was a special occasion, I decided to kick over the traces and fly first class but what I really splurged on was membership in the Red Carpet Club.  It was expensive but definitely worth the money for someone like me, who isn't afraid to fly but who DOES distrust having to spend hours waiting in a busy, crowded airport.  For each flight -- to California...

United Airlines announced yesterday that they were going to deliver a worse product to American travelers and to deceive their customers by charging unexpected, unavoidable nickel-and-dime fees on so much as ONE single piece of baggage.

Travelers have an expectation that they'll need some clothing and toiletries whereever they go, so not bringing a suitcase isn't exactly a viable solution. People can grab a sandwich at a convenience store on the way to the airport to make up for cutbacks in in-flight meals, but how do you make up for getting slammed on a baggage fee? Perhaps fees on 2nd or 3rd pieces...

I am quite loyal to United and have flown over 800,000 miles with them mostly domestic.  I seldom fly coach, I get upgraded at least 90% of the time and am truly greatful for the upgrades, but I am extremely disappointed in the downgrading ,of food offerings in First Class.  First Class food was much  better when they were in bankruptcy.  I am tired of sandwiches and salads.

Even service in their P.S. flights to JFK is not what they used to be; appetizers are gone as are the bellini's and truffles and in business class the food is awful, plus there are fewer Flight Attendants.  Mr. Tilton...

The increase in oil prices may put several airlines in jeopardy.  United Airlines could easily fall victim to this trend. You may see an instant end to the Frequent Flyer Program as well as surcharges for bags in the next few weeks.  My advice, if you have lots of miles, is to burn them ASAP.  Also remember, if the FFP is abandoned, you will not have the perks to upgrade seats or to use the First Class check in agents.  Update:  United admits to the surcharge for baggage on 6/12/08.  Use those FFP miles ASAP!!!

We had a nice vacation in the DC area for Thanksgiving but it was time to return to Montana.

We checked in electronically at Dulles and asked the counter attendant why our seat assignments were not on the tickets.  There were to be assigned at the gate, so away we went.  Once arriving at the gate an hour prior to boarding, the counter person seemed to be on a personal call on their cell phone with ten people in line.  After thirty-five minutes, we received our seat assignments:10A, 16B, and 21A.  We advised this was unacceptable as we had a 2 1/2 year old and one of us needed to be seated...

I was traveling to Philadelphia on a United Airlines flight originating at the John Wayne airport on Jan. 16, 2009.  I am not a frequent flier. I last flew in 2005. I did not know that certain airlines have a 45 minute cut-off time for checking in bags.

I arrived at the curb check-in kiosk at 43 minutes prior to my departure time. 2 minutes late for the check-in. The United personnel at the kiosk would not let me check in my bag.  That was not the worst part of my experience at John Wayne Airport. The WORST part is that they would not help me figure out a way to stay on my flight and still get...

My husband and I planned a trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico for Feburary 2009.  We purchased our plane tickets in May of 2008.  Our original plan was to fly Delta to Las Vegas than United to Dallas FortWorth and then on to Puerto Rico.  In August our 2hr lay over in Vegas turned into a 7 hr lay over so we found another United flight that flew out of Vegas that same night and flew to Miami and then to puerto Rico.  we called United had our flights changed and was told that they would not be able to change our delta flight, we told them that was fine we wanted our delta flight.  So they just needed...

I will start by saying that I fly more than I like. I travel between US an Europe 4-7 times per year. I typically use United. There fares are compareable to the other optional airline. With their partner airline the connections are ok. I will say that they are not very flexible for letting you on different flights even when you have no luggage and there are empty seat unless it is in their favor. Example arrive to ORD and their is a flight to STL in 20 minutes but your booked flight is for the next flight in 1 1/2 hours but if there is an over booked next flight or something that might result in... review »

Frequent travel to Europe.  I've found  United to have reasonable pricing, good schedules and most importantly;  UA  does not gate-way at JFK!   Dulles is a dream.  After an extended period abroad,  it is a true pleasure to return to USA via Dulles rather than NYC. Even ORD is miles ahead of JFK.   Returning through NYC is an abrupt ending to a pleasant journey.   NYC airport personnel are extremely rude and seem to be indifferent, especially after being treated respectfully at European locations.

Had my assigned seating changed a couple of times, but have never been given a lesser...

American Airlines  well were can we begin...  I am a single parent with a 20 year old and a 2 year old its hard but i love them both dearly..  I am planning to go to Mexico and im taking my 2 year old. and the prices are the same as an adult .. Thatsa good chunk of change...  They use to have price cuts for children not no more..  Hell they are taxing us for gas, extra luggage, water , meals to..... Then  to be put through the test at the airport with all the checking  the serching and the undressing of items.  Now they are saying the prices are going  to go up aging.... Its hard enough... review »

United is a very consistent airline; they are generally on time, their prices are usually 2nd or third cheapest, and they have fairly decent customer service.

Their mileage plus frequent flyer program, while hard to earn miles, is fairly good, and it is not extremely difficult to earn a free flight (I've earned one before); also, they are with the Star Alliance, so flights with any other Star Alliance team airline can also have their miles credited to your account.

Ordering online with them is also easy; however they do not fly to many locations.
