The increase in oil prices may put several airlines in jeopardy.  United Airlines could easily fall victim to this trend. You may see an instant end to the Frequent Flyer Program as well as surcharges for bags in the next few weeks.  My advice, if you have lots of miles, is to burn them ASAP.  Also remember, if the FFP is abandoned, you will not have the perks to upgrade seats or to use the First Class check in agents.  Update:  United admits to the surcharge for baggage on 6/12/08.  Use those FFP miles ASAP!!!

I hear you, Babs. That's why I spent a lot of miles on my last trip. If you've got 'em, use 'em!

In response to steve9631's comment from May 27, 2008 at 3:03PM:

All the Major Airlines bank cash in reserves to cover the cost of the frequent flyer programs and our travel associated with it. They will need this money to offset the rising cost of fuel. Since posting this, I have also learned that United is going to charge for checked baggage. So, make your reservations now and burn those miles. If you can't use them all, see if you can donate them to another person and take them along. Cheers!

How have you heard this? I have a ton of frequent flyer miles with some travel booked currently on frequent flyer miles, ( not on United). I'm very interested if this is an upcoming trend, or just an action for an airline in distress.
