We'll never know exactly what went down on United flight 93 on September 11, 2001, but United 93 offers a possible explanation, a definitely plausible explanation. With this film coming out just a few years since 9/11, everything is still very fresh in our minds of what happened and how it all felt to watch our country so affected by what is perhaps the largest tragedy so far in our lifetimes.

One of the more interesting parts of United 93 is seeing this tragedy happen from the viewponts of those we haven't heard from yet. We've heard from the survivors of those that perished on the flight, we've heard from firemen in New York City, and we've heard from survivors of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Yet, we haven't heard from  the air traffic ontrollers, the terrorists, or the people on the actual flight, the latter of which we can only presume, as they only became known to us after they lost their lives.

To humanize the terrorists, we see them preparing for the flight in their hotel rooms, reciting the Quran, and one of them even shaving his body in preparation for the bomb which he'll attach to himself in the airplane bathrom. As they leave for the airport, they drive past a sign that says, "God Bless America," something of which wasn't just thought of much by the average American before this day, but became more more meaninful after with an entirely different outlook for the whole country.

Flight 93 is delayed, sitting on the runway in Boston making the terrorists very nervous about carrying out their plan. While they're sitting on the runway, the air traffic controllers start seeing something odd happening with American Airlines flight 11. It goes off path, stops listening to their instructions, and I'm sure hoping the following bit of dialogue was purely fiction and not what happened, as one of the controllers who is in contact with the the flight tells his coworker than he thinks it's a possible hijack. When they ask him how he knows, he says it's because he was told in a foreign voice that they have taken control of the plane and they're turning it around. His coworker tells him not to jump to conclusions. My only thought was no wonder our airspace was so vulnerable if we weren't calling this a hijacking situation, and we had no protocol for it.

As the flight finally leaves Boston, the pilot calls their attention to the left side of the airplane where they can see a beautiful view of the NYC skyline, and we just happen to notice both towers still standing. We probably don't know if this is something that really happened or not, but it certainly added some drama to the scene. With American Airlines flight 11 still off the radar, the air traffic controllers look up and see on their televisions one of the towers with a gaping hole in it and smoke. The clasped hands, dropped jaws and hand-covered mouths we know really did happen, as it's the same thing we were all doing. After a few minutes they begin to connect the huge gaping hole and missing flight.

The rest of the film as it plays out shows the air traffic controllers and the drama inside United flight 93 as the hijackers take over the plane. This scenario is put together and imagined using the the phone calls home by the people on the flight as well as the flight recorders. We'll never know exactly what it was that went down, but United 93 offers us enough of a scenario to make us relive that tragedy all around and see how it affected others in some ways that we never even considered, such as the air traffic controllers as they tried to sort it all out.
