I've had a variety of cordless telephones over the last ten years or so, and each one seems worse than the last.  Do we have to go back to the rotary dials with those curly-q phone cords that always get tangled up?

Most recently I bought the Uniden Cordless Phone DXA15688, which cost about $79.  It seemed like a good deal and had a lot of good features. But overall I'm not satisfied.

This cordless phone operates at 5.8 Ghz and has a built-in answering machine (digital). The phone display lights up to show the number you are dialing and will also do so if you have caller ID. The phone rests in the battery charger and there is a nice big display with the number of messages. It also looks decent and does not take up a lot of room on the counter - so far so good.

Programming the answering machine was about average. I always need to consult the owner's manual when I want to alter the outgoing message though, since all the modes and the order that you have to press the butons in get confusing.

My biggest complaint about the Uniden Cordless Phone DXA15688 is the sound quality. Not always, but oftentimes it's just hard to heard the person on the other line. I don't wander more than 15 feet from the base unit either!  The sound is just too faint, I hear a faint buzzing noise, or sometimes a weird clicking sound. There seems to be no pattern to the problems either.

While this Uniden telephone does have some good features and works fine about two-thirds of the time, the rest of the time it's almost painful to have a conversation on the phone when I cannot properaly hear the other person. For this reason I do not recommend it and will buy some other brand next time.

I hope you found an acceptable phone. My Uniden is mediocre at best !

Yowzer, I'm glad I read your review. I've had such good luck with my Uniden, (which I just reviewed) I was honestly considering an upgrade hoping for a bit more roam range. Like Gigi, I, too, need to have a land line in case of a (unfortunately somewhat frequent) power out, but we rarely use it. Thanks for a detailed review. I think I'll stick with what we've got!

I have a Uniden cordless phone and it's awful. So many things are bad about it. I need to review it. It may even be this one! mine came with extra handsets though. Sound quality is awful.

I'm glad to hear your phones work fine. Maybe I'm getting interference form somewhere? I noticed the reviews of Uniden products are split between those who love them and those who have trouble with sound quality.

I love my Unidens. I have 2 cordless phone systems, both Unidens but I also keep one landline system in my master bedroom so if the power goes out I still have a working phone. I have loved my Unidens and I'm sorry to hear ( no pun intended) that your experience wasn't all that great.

Thank you for the comment on the cordless phone. That's a good point about being able to use corded phones if the power goes out. We rarely get storms or power outages where I live, but they can happen anywhere.

I'm not fond of cordless phones at all. In fact, in a hurricane they can be a liability vis a vis the older phones (touch tone) because they can't be used at all if the power goes out. I'll stick to my corded (but non-rotary) phones any day. Good write-up, though.
