I'm a masochist. Body waxing, eyebrows in particular, is one of the most amazing feelings to me - the hot wax spreading on skin, the tingle as it cools, the abrupt pull to get those little suckers (hairs) out of my body for at least the next four weeks. My excitement has less to do with shaping my brows and more to do with the process.

My one attempt to wax my own eyebrows ended up a disaster. It is harder than it looks. I took off too much in one place and not enough in the other. I came out with half-baked brows, vowing to never put myself through that again.

For the longest time I went to my local Hair Cuttery and for $8 got my brows waxed. They usually turned out nicely shaped, and it usually hurt a lot because they use the "old-fashioned" pour-wax-on-then-attach-strip technique. I'd emerge in a buzzed state, as if I had drunk a glass of red wine.

One day while skimming through Clipper magazine I found a coupon for a FREE eyebrow wax at Uni.K.Wax for new customers. Cool! I am always up for saving money. The store is located less than two minutes from my home. I called them up and made an appointment for later that afternoon. It's been a month since my last wax and my eyebrows were in serious need of a cleaning up, and I was in serious need of a good buzz.

The reception is beautiful and sterile. Decorations are very modern. The receptionist was nice as can be (Cannot recall her name). I filled out a form about the condition of my skin, handed her my driver's license so she could make an official file on me (and that would prevent me from getting another free wax), and within three minutes the wax specialist introduced herself and took me back to a private room, like an exam room at a doctor's office. The wax center has half a dozen of these.

I started to freak out. A private room for something as quick and small as eyebrow waxing? Sure, bikinis would be a different story, but brows literally take 60 seconds. The private room is sterile like the reception. I climbed onto a soft "exam" table with the familiar carbon paper and tried to relax while laying on my back. So unnecessary. The specialist (Whom I've also forgotten the name of. A bad habit of mine) combed out my brows to assess the direction of hair growth, then wheeled over a cart with a pot of hot wax. OH YES. She spread the wax on and pulled it off after giving it five seconds to cool. No strips, just as much pain. She finished off with an aloe treatment to soothe my skin, then sent me on my way. It was fast, and laying on the table still felt silly, but I was thrilled with the procedure.

My brows looked perfect. The best shaping job ever done on me. Before leaving I asked the receptionist what the cost normally is for eyebrow waxing. $16. Double the amount of my salon. She did such a good job, I might go back. It makes sense to get it done by people who specialize in waxing every day, not a hair dresser who is trained to do it as a side task.
