Finally!! For those who have followed the Underworld movies since the first one, Rise of the Lycans as satisfying as it gets!
In the original Underworld, I found myself wanting...more. More action, bigger, badder werewolves, more aggressive and tougher vampires - I was a bit disappointed in the weakness of both races. And when Michael became a hybrid between the two, I expected him to be the Ultimate fighter. Wrong. He was tough enough to beat Viktor, but he just didn't look as impressive as I thought he should. I mean, shouldn't he have been like twice the others' size?
And I must admit, the vampires' and werewolves' past was every bit as interesting to me as their present. I'm one of those who feels that the background is essential to telling a story, and the few flashes in the first two movies left me wanting more.
In Rise of the Lycans, I got more! Here we see the start of the feud, fleshing out of the characters' stories, several nagging questions answered, and bigger, badder werewolves. I was on the edge of my seat! And the twists of the characters' origins from what we originally defined as good and bad in the first movie were absolutely brilliant. This was a movie that could easily have originally been a book - the storyline was that good. And if you pause to ponder about the usual "book is better than the movie" stigma, the ramnifications of what would be missing if there were more is just fascinating.
I bought this one on DVD, and hope to see more to come!
