It seems like a lot of my reviews start like this, but anyway Peapod was having this sale on Uncle Ben's products -- ten for $10 -- and I fell for it like a ton of bricks. Among the items I'm trying for the first time is Uncle Ben's Whole Grain Brown Ready Rice. My gourmet cooking days (when I used to put out the white linen cloth along with fancy dishes and crystal) are pretty much a nostalgic memory now but even I can handle the prep work involved in these Ready Rice things. Stoically, I tore one corner of the package to allow the steam to vent and heated the gol-darned thing for 90 seconds in the microwave. This stuff is delicious either served plain as a side dish or as a "bed" of rice for oriental food, hot salsa, or other type of entree.
STATS:
The package holds two one-cup servings each containing 240 calories with 30 calories from fat. There are three grams total fat, zero each saturated and trans fat, zero cholesterol, 15 mg. sodium, 100 mg. potassium, 39 grams total carbs, two grams dietary fiber, zero grams sugars and five grams protein. Also included are 6% (D.V.) each Iron and Thiamin, 4% Folate, and 25% Niacin.
TASTE TIP:
Uncle Ben's Whole Grain Brown Ready Rice is good when used in a hundred different ways but I used this to finish off my Newman's Own Medium Chunky Salsa heated up and with a topping of melted cheese. As a counterpoint here, I must add that I think it is time the folks at Uncle Ben's got with the program and started producing convenience dishes like this in bigger sizes for families.
