After my rollover in October of '94 I was in serious pain and the rehabilitation Dr. prescribed Ultram because he said he would not give me a Narcotic Pain Reliever until it was determined that my pain was real! As you can imagine I wanted to knock him into space right about then but being I could barely move I just sat there and stewed. I had no choice of doctors at the time so I took what I could get.

Anyway I was to take it every 6 hours and was hoping it would give me some relief but as the days turned to weeks I was only sleeping 2 hours at a time and friends said I looked like death warmed over. I then decided to issue a complaint through work and get a different Dr. as the quack I was seeing refused to give me anything else because in his opinion I was faking it! The only thing I got from taking it were constant headaches, so the cure was worse than I started with.

If you have teenagers you will appreciate this next part...lol My oldest daughter was almost 17 at the time and she ripped into that Dr. like I had never seen her act before, when she was done with him I was proud of her. She never cussed but she made him feel as if she was the Dr. and he was a student. The next Dr. I went too took a MRI which was the first taken (almost 4 weeks after my accident) and before I walked out the door he told me to throw the Ultram away and gave me a prescription for Loratabs.

I was diagnosed with severe nerve damage in both arms, torn muscles in my back, plus disc damage in both my upper and lower back. Since then I have had 5 surgeries to repair damage but they were only moderately successful.

Now almost 14 years later I am still on Loratabs and have not touched Ultram since that first time. I have been told by many Dr.'s over the years that Ultram is for Moderately Severe Pain but not certain causes of that pain. Mine is mainly nerve damage and Ultram will not touch that type of pain in 95% of the people that take it. I can attest to that because I now take Loratab 10's plus Fentanyl 50mcg Patches and Gabapentin to control my pain.

Bottom Line

Ultram may work for some people but it will not work for pain associated with nerve damage. When I was taking it I may have well have been taking M & M's for all the good it did me. I put some of the blame on Dr.'s but more so on our Government for the problem. You see they regulate drugs to the point that Dr.'s are scared to prescribe a stronger drug at first and turn us into guinea pigs.

Well, now you see why where the term "patient" comes from. Because patients have to put up with so much CRAP!

I was the union mediator in many cases such as yours, and I gleefully kicked more than one of those parasite doctors butts over the years. The general public has no idea of what honest people have to go through in cases of on the job injury. That is the primary reason I have never, and never will step one foot in a Wal-Mart. I am extremely happy for you that things worked out.

You guessed that one on the nose Steve....it was a workers comp Dr. in fact but to serve the patient properly things need to be changed...;)

steve9631 wrote on Aug 27, 2008 at 12:20PM

Sounds like you had a doc appointed by your company or the insurance company. While it's still a common practice in the US today, it should be corrected. Just guessing in regards to your circumstance. Sorry to read of your misfortunes.

Ain't that the truth...lol I still tell her I want her at all my Dr. visits...lol ;)

Good to know. I am glad your daughter stuck it to that first doctor. There is no greater pain than experts who are stupid.

That's 5 since I rolled the truck, I had one prior on my left knee but yeah it does make for a sore body. I am glad they work, it just seems like it took a long time to finally figure out what worked...;)

You had 5 surgeries? You poor thing. That is terrible. I can't imagine the pain you must still be in. Glad that the Loratab and the patches work for you.
