Ugly Betty is one of my favorite shows. It is on at 8 pm on Thursday nights on ABC, and it just started its second season. Betty is the main character who is Hispanic and not a size two who works as an assistant at a fashion magazine named Mode. She is not very fashionable with her glasses and braces so she is the fish out of water at a magazine where everyone is thin and vain. In contrast, Betty's home in Queens is down-to-earth with her father, sister, and nephew. Newly out of the college, Betty hopes to run her own magazine one day and proves herself to be smarter than her boss, the owner's son, Daniel Meade. The show is based on a Spanish telenovela so it is very soapy and campy. For example, Daniel's sister used to be his brother, and Wilhelmina, one of the editors, is such a villain the fireplace burns brighter when she is around.

American Ferrara as Betty is the heart and soul of the show. I also love the characters of Amanda played by Becky Newton and Marc played by Michael Urie. They are mean to Betty, but their over-the-top friendship is hilarious. My love for this show solidified during the first season during the Christmas show when Amanda danced to the song "Mambo Santa". I have a new Christmas song now! What I love the most is the positive message the show sends about loving yourself despite size, ethnicity, or sexual orientation.
