I had the occasion to fly from Seattle to Islip, NY on a business trip for a conference, and chose US Air because of their best by half pricing. The experience was kinda benign. It wasn't bad service, but it wasn't particularly good either. Flight left a little late from Seattle, and Philadelphia, and Islip on the return, but nothing major. My luggage showed up when I did. Snacks on the flight were OK. Like I said, I had no complaints, I was just a long way from thrilled. I believe my lack of enthusiasm was due to the attitude that seemed to prevail throughout my interactions with US Air employees. Nothing seemed to be a big deal to them, it was just business as usual. It was kinda like watching your dog sleep on the porch in the sun, then getting up to eat upon being called when he really wasn't hungry.
My colleague however who was coming in from Portland, Oregon, and working with me on the trip, had his bag lost, and was bumped from a flight changing planes in Philadelphia on the way home. The bad thing about losing his luggage was he had no carry on, and his suits and medicine were in his luggage. It's tough to work a conference in a pair of cargo shorts. His fault as much as the airline's in my opinion, cause if you don't back up with a carry on for your essentials in these days of modern, budget trimmed airline flight, it's your own fault. There's lots o' bags hurling through the air with you these days, and some of them are just gonna head the wrong direction. That being said, I've found that it doesn't happen near as much on the better airlines.
As far as myself, I'd fly them again for a good price, but they wouldn't be first on my list.
