US Airways —

Were were scheduled to fly out of Cancun when our flight was over an hour late because the crew hadn't shown up.  At the airport, they kept calling for our crew to report to duty.  Cancun is known for being a party place, so that made us rather nervous.

When we arrived at Phoenix (our layover), we were concerned about missing the next flight.  However, many flights had been delayed due to a thunderstorm, so we had hope that we might still make it.  We had to get off and go through customs, which was 1 1/2 miles away from the gate.  The representatives from U.S. Air said that if we missed our flight, we were on our own for accommodations (it was late at night) even though the missed flight was their fault.  They couldn't tell us whether or not our flight had left yet.  They suggested that we just go to the gate.  We ran with all our carry on the 1 1/2 miles (the person at the gate told us that it was this distance), went through security, made it to the gate, only to find out that our plane had left.  They were able to get us on the next flight (the last one of the night) and we were the last ones to board before the plane took off.

As the plane was taxiing, it was making a very strange noise that I have never heard before.  I couldn't believe that they took off anyway.  I really thought we weren't going to make it.  When we landed at our destination, some of the engines stopped working, enough that we had to be towed the last 100 yards into the gate.  (Good thing it didn't happen in the air).

Of course, our luggage didn't make it with us, which didn't surprise me.  However, there was no one at the airport to make a claim with because it was after midnight.  We had to wait until they opened in the morning.  We live 3 hours from the airport, so we went ahead and drove home.  We got home around 4:00 a.m. after being up over 24 hours (due to time change and all).  When I called the customer service and reported our lost luggage, they said we had to go back to Portland to claim it.  I told them that would be impossible because we lived 3 hours away and we had a houseful of company because of a friend's wedding that day (which we went to after having no sleep).  They said that if we didn't, it would be shipped back to Phoenix and we would have to write a letter to have it retrieved.  I told them this was unacceptable.  After arguing with them for over 45 minutes and asking to talk to a supervisor, they finally agreed to send it to my home and we did receive it by 11 a.m. that morning.

That experience was a year ago.  This year, we were on a cruise and talking with other passengers, and there were several that talked about their nightmare getting there because of US Air and almost missing the cruise.  One of the people at our table worked for the government and he said that US Air is one airline that they are not allowed to fly while doing government business because of inconsistent service, lost luggage and flight delays.  Buyer beware!!!

I don't appreciate your insulting me. If the crew needed "crew rest," then the airline should have known that and they wouldn't have been calling them over and over to report to the plane over the loudspeaker.

As far as the noise, we flew on 4 US Air flights and hadn't heard that noise before. We've flown on numerous other airlines without hearing that noise, granted they probably weren't airbus, but I do believe that all the US Air flights we took were. Also, they told us that the engines stopped working and that was why they had to tow us into the gate. I have been on planes where we had to be towed in for other reasons (tight turn, too close to the building, noise, etc.), but they said the engines quit working and we had to be towed in for that reason.

Their lack of service regarding our lost luggage was appalling, and the fact that they wouldn't have been willing to put us up for the night if we wouldn't have been able to take the last flight out, when it was their fault we missed our scheduled flight makes this inexcusable.

I stand by my comments and I question your motives in insulting me.

Sounds like u dont fly much. The crew is required to have a minimum amount of time for their layover called "crew rest" and that is why they showed up late; they were probably late from the previous day. As for the noise, what you heard (on an airbus aircraft) was the testing of the hydraulics, that sounds like a barking dog in the cargo bin. All Airbus aircraft have it; Boeing doesnt. Consider yourself a little more educated before dogging an airline and something u dont know much about
