The Graduate School of Education at Penn really delivers an amazing education. You can be as involved or un-involved as you like and still learn a lot! The electives are set up to be as flexible as possible, and some programs have as many as five or six. This allows you to pursue anything of interest to you. And if you're interested in it, chances are good there is an available advisor or two who would love to mentor you!
I would recommend very strongly that you get involved in the GSE community in any way you can. Especially p/t students! Part-time students often have a lot on their plates (full-time work, families, elder care, etc.), but because the programs can be so broad in scope and elective choice, involvement on even a minimal level will allow you to network. Trust me--a friendly face in a new class is a huge advantage at the beginning of a semester.
I didn't get involved until I was almost done with my Masters. I had the 'usual' reasons (full-time job, part-time job, planning a wedding, etc.). It's a shame--because I have benefitted greatly from my current involvement. I missed that benefit and the comraderie I could have had much earlier on if I'd been willing to put myself out there a little bit more...
