A few weeks ago a friend from out of state sent me the link to her twitter homepage and asked me if I wanted to follow her. Well, I had been seeing some commercials for Twitter but wasn't too sure about this site thing. You know me and the whole social networking thing but I trusted my friend and clicked on her link and the rest as they say is history.
So, what is Twitter? It's a community site that allows you to connect with others and in 140 characters or less you answer one question. "What are you doing?" Why only 140 characters? The site says that the typical text box will allow up to 160 characters so they have subtracted 20 to allow for the reply at domain. If you really feel the need to express yourself with more than 140 characters you can join twitlong; which is not affiliated with Twitter and they enable you to post longer messages. The reader will only see the first 140 but is then able to click on a link that will reveal the rest of the message.
There is also another feature called twitpic; which is similar to twitlong. You can register there and this allows you to share pictures with your post.
What is the big fascination with Twitter? Well, for me it is seeing the celebrities post comments and connecting with them. I know many aren't going to respond but you get lucky and a few actually reach out to you. I have had a few from Melissa Gilbert (LHOP) and just got one from her about an hour ago. Demi Moore connected me with Paula Abdul since I love to dance and then I got a message from her! I got a few messages from Kelly Ripa before her profile was shut down due to hacking. And, it is believed that I may have been the first one to send Oprah a tweet when she went live on her show Friday. Read a comment from CoupleOnCloud9 posted on April 17th to see what I am talking about.
If you want to follow celebrities it can get difficult because many noncelebrities establish a fake profile and picture for the celebrity. I pay attention to who the celebrities are talking to. For instance, Allison Arngrim (Nellie Olson on LHOP) tweeted Melissa Gilbert and then Gilbert gave the public Arngrim's screen name. Some celebrities, such as Julianne Hough (DWTS) only use Twitter for promotion purposes. They don't post any comments, just where they will be next, what their latest release will be, what charity or organization they are sponsoring, and so forth. Other celebrities may let an agent do all the posting on their behalf. And yet others join the ranks of the real world and chat live. Demi Moore does a lot as well as Melissa Gilbert, Soleil Moon Frye (Punky Brewster), Brooke Burke (DWTS), Kathie Lee Gifford and Chuck Wicks (country music and DWTS). Yeah, these are some of the celebrities I am following.
Hey, CelebSideDish began following me and now we send each other messages on a regular basis. If you love reality shows, you would probably love them. They are like an online celebrity gossip column. They critique the people on the shows, cheer them on, boo them, etc. but it's all in good fan and they really interact with their fan base.
I also have fun tweeting with my friends and many here at Viewpoints have accounts there. Some people use Twitter as a promotional site to tell others about products and articles at other sites. For example, I could put the link to a review here on Twitter to get the word out on a product. Many who are writing for Associated Content, Examiner, and so forth are putting the link to their articles on Twitter. Viewpoints even has a profile at Twitter!
With Twitter you can choose to follow and block people and others will be following and possibly be blocking you. All messages are posted for public viewing unless you and the other person are both following each other, then you can send a Direct (private) Message. You will get an email telling you if someone has decided to follow you. You can then visit their profile and decide if you want to also follow them, block them or just let them follow you.
If someone is following you they will see every update you post unless it is a Direct Message. However, if you are not following them you will not see their updates. On the other hand, if you are following them, such is the case with many celebrities; but they are not following you then you will only see their updates but they won't see yours. They will, however, see a comment that you send to them. I have already blocked a few people that seemed sort of sleazy but other than that I am just having a great time!
With Twitter you don't have to be at a computer. Many are tweeting from cellphones, Ipods, and other connection devices. You can also get "in the loop"; which my friend does often and this gives people a map of your current location and they can try to connect with you that way. I personally don't want to "be in the loop" because I would be paranoid about my safety and I don't have enough local friends following me to need everyone to know where I'm at.
You can personalize your profile by choosing profile pic, background design and colors. So, what are you doing? If you want to check out my profile you can find me at http://twitter.com/LittleGigiGirl
