I purchased the Euro Sponge #10 from Twist around the beginning of the year. Silly me, I didn't open it until last week because I had stocked up on my regular kitchen sponge - you know the kind: encased in cloth on one side and a scrubby mesh on the other. I don't know if I unknowingly changed brands or if they changed their product, but lately the inside sponges have flattened within just a few days of use and then disintegrated quite rapidly. I had become disillusioned, to say the least.
During a trip to the natural foods co-op that we frequent, I stumbled upon the Euro Sponge #10 hanging on a display. It's a pleasant minty-green color (maybe referring to "eco-friendly"?), looks rather dense and flat like a pad instead of fluffy like a regular sponge, and is biodegradable - and it says it's durable. Hmm. Maybe it's time for a change.
Even though I still have 2 of my old sponges in an unopened package, I was rather disgusted with the short life of the last one, so I thought it was time to try this new-fangled thing.
I have small hands, so a typical kitchen sponge is about the right size for me. This Euro Sponge #10 is about twice that width, so I cut it in half. It now fits in my hand great, and of course just doubled its worth to me. I didn't understand what they really meant by "Cleans + Wipes + Dries" on their label, but now I get it. Unlike other sponges and rags, after wiping the counter or table it doesn't leave behind a puddle wannabe. It leaves it practically dry - a few seconds later you'd never know it was recently wet. It holds the soap very well without creating an overflow of suds while wiping, and it did a nice job on a couple of stubborn, dried spills that I had to use force on to remove. And it was great for washing dishes, as it is completely flexible - no "breaking in" like with a hard new sponge.
When it needs to be refreshed, just throw it in the dishwasher, or sterilize it by boiling - it will hold up to such treatment. And it even says that you can convert the packaging into a small bird feeder with a little craft know-how!
I'm liking this sponge a whole bunch, and wishing I'd opened it when I first got it. Go try it - you'll be pleased you did! And Mother Earth will thank you.
