A cliched romance tale disguised as a fantasy story.

Meyer's prose is decent, but her plot and character development are so atrocious that even the most brilliantly-worded sentences couldn't save them. Twilight's main character, Bella Swan, lacks any personality and gives the reader little motivation to like her. In fact, Bella's role in the novel seems to be solely that of "self-insert." Want to pretend you've got a hot vampire boyfriend? Just read Twilight and imagine you're the main character!

Edward Cullen, Bella's love interest, does actually have a personality, but it's riddled with vampire cliches. This in itself isn't a problem -- what vampire book is complete without a vampire who falls in love with a human? But Edward never seems to step beyond these cliches and ultimately becomes just as boring as Bella, and certainly more annoying (as we're subjected to constant descriptions of how wonderful he is).

Overall, Twilight is not even a fantasy novel. It is Meyer's wish-fulfillment story, a romance tale hidden in a world of vampires and werewolves. Unfortunately, even the romance tale is complete garbage.

The two main characters are very weak and how much can we read about 'how beautiful' these vampire's are? and how awkward and clumsy bella is. Alright already, we get it, spare us the repetitive details, please.

I agree with you that the characters are very wrong constructed. And everything else you say about Bella and Edward. The oher character are better than they are and they are suppose to be the maim characters.

Totally agree with you. I love vampire books, and am an avid reader of Sherrilyn Kenyon and Christine Feehan..but the characterization of the books is horrible. Bella feels more like a Mary Sue than a character one can associate with.

I totally agree. I probably tossed the book aside a hundred times. It's unbelievably irritating (Bella especially). It was an effort to finish the book.
