I am always looking for good books for my middle school daughter, who LOVES to read, but is kind of spoiled by the Harry Potter series, so she's a tough customer. I was a little concerned because I had heard the book was very seductive, and I was wondering if it would be too explicit for a 'tween. I read the book myself, and I absolutely loved it. I enthusiastically passed it on to my daughter, who loved it too, and got in line for the sequel at the library.
Main character Bella, a 17-year old girl, falls in love with a dashing 17-year old boy (Edward) who happens to be a vampire. They do not have a sexual relationship, for all of you parents wondering. The reason it is so "seductive," in my opinion, is that the author's character development of the boy is so fabulous. He is charming, gentlemanly, he uses his powers to save Bella from disasters, and well, he happens to be strikingly good-looking too. Because he is from an earlier era thanks to his immortality, he is reminiscent of a Jane Austen character. The author simply makes you fall in love with him. I must say that I didn't find the book "scary" at all--it is captivating, suspenseful, and romantic instead.
The boy is from a family of vampires who choose to prey only upon wild animals (deer, bears, etc.) even though they are drawn to humans. The conflict in the story results from Edward's love for Bella and desire to be with her, but his fear that he might someday lose control and harm her.
It is amazing how the suspension of disbelief kicks in when the characters are so well-developed, as they are in this book. It is a rare gem, and I am looking forward to reading the next two books in the series, as soon as I can pry them out of my daughter's hands.
