TurboTax 2008 Deluxe Tax Preparation Software —

This review has been updated below.

It seems strange to remember that there was a time years ago when filing my Federal income tax with the 1040EZ form took only about ten minutes.  Things got a tad more complicated when I bought a home and began to itemize deductions.  Everything began to slide downhill when I retired and suddenly had to report income pensions, dividends and interest payments from several different sources.  I'm not complaining about having retirement income, of course, but it did complicate the tax-reporting process to the point where I actually overpaid some taxes.  A couple experiences with H. R. Block years ago had not inspired a lot of confidence but clearly I wasn't doing so well by myself either.

ENTER, TURBOTAX

It was with some misgivings that I gave TurboTax tax preparation software a try.  The first time I used it seemed to be a lengthy process because the program asked for great detail.  No longer could I just run up a tape of my charitable donations and add in the total -- No, Turbotax expected me to list each organization and its address, plus the amount of my annual gift for each one.  (Each year that I have used this software, it has given me an option to tranfer information from the previous year into the current return and editing amounts, which has simplified the process greatly.)

All this detailed effort began paying off immediately -- the very first year I was able to save hundreds of dollars.  I still had to pay something at the end of the tax year but Turbotax made it easy to do that and also set up estimated tax vouchers for me to use on a quarterly basis during the next year.

MY VIEWPOINT:

This year, Intuit took their signature tax software to a whole new place with TurboTax 2008 Deluxe Tax Preparation Software which not only makes it possible to file Federal and State taxes but also gave me the option of deducting the cost of the software and also filing electronically at no charge for the refund which (Hallelujah!) finally was due me this year.  I filed on February 5th and have already received the notice that the Federal Government has received my e-return and will be posting my refund to my checking account on February 20th.  (Knock on e-wood!)  When I get my refund, I will return to this review and update it with a confirmation that this actually happened when they said it would.

In conclusion, I have got to say that I would recommend TurboTax 2008 Deluxe Tax Preparation Software to anyone else whose 1040EZ days are a thing of the past.

There's good news today!

This is February 13th, only eight days after I filed my TurboTax 2008 Deluxe Tax Preparation Software return and my tax refund was safe and secure in my checking account this morning!  Definitely, I recommend this product to most taxpayers.

I used Turbo Tax a couple of years and liked it, then last year did them on line .. I thought for free. But can't find that site back! I have a Schedule K-1 this years, so am trying to decide what to do. GOOD write up.

You must not have much interest to report on your mortgage or maybe you're just almost finshed paying it off. My interest on my Home Equity Loan is the only reason I itemize. Good for you!

Isn't it sad that I can still file a 1040 EZ? I do my taxes online and I start off itemizing because I'm a homebuyer. In the end the site will tell me which is going to produce the greater profit and it will automatically default me back to itemized or standard.

Gee, I'm not sure of that but I do know it asked about things like foreign income and oh all sorts of income, really a lot of questions about a lot of things. What it seemed to do with my stuff is it used my entries to create the forms which I could print with the information in them when I was done, i.e. if I had had State of Illinois tax, it would have printed all that information in a State of Illinois return which came with the package. My suggestion would be to google the question of what forms this version contains and see what comes up. I know it asked a lot of questions about a lot of things. Geez, your tax really sounds complicated -- I don't know, I think sometimes it's may be not a bad idea to use an accountant but Turbotax was pretty good.

Thanks for the information at this dreaded time of the year. I will have to try the software and see what it does for us. Does it have all those Forms like 6251, 1116 for foreign tax info, 8801 exclusion items? Or do we have to get them separately?? Thanks if you know the answers to those questions. Pat

You know, Lisa, I think if I had kids I would never get my taxes done AT ALL. The IRS would have to just "take me in" for non-payment. Once you do the TurboTax one time though, it gets easier after that because you can convert so much of it over. I'm just keeping an eagle eye posted for that e-refund!!!!!

LisaCarey wrote on Feb 12, 2009 at 10:45AM

I am jealous how on earth did you get them done so fast. if only the girls napped longer!

You're asking MOI a question like THAT! WHOOOOOOAAAAAAA! (Just checked the package, couldn't find an answer!)

TunefulGal wrote on Feb 11, 2009 at 12:12AM

I think you are the smartest cousin. I wouldn't have the confidence to do this although I might be tempted to try after I pay the accountant this year. Do you know if there's a Turbo for Mac?

We have such a complicated tax situation that we couldn't use this but it sounds like a reliable program!

LaurieM wrote on Feb 7, 2009 at 8:38PM

This sounds like a great program! Thankfully, we have an accountant in the family who does ours. He still charges us though!!

Glad to hear this one works for you. I'm still debating which one to buy - my taxes are complicated this year!
