I don't have tons of hair so I can't say how well the Turbie works on people with lots of long, thick hair, but what I do know is that it works good for me!
The Turbie looks like the hood on a hoodie but with a long anteater snout looking thing coming out of the top. To put it on, simply place the hood part over the back of the head, stuff your hair into the anteater part, twist it up and over the top of your head and secure the end thru the elastic. It's very easy to put on and it really stays put. I've used it a few times when deep conditioning my hair while vacuuming, working out, cleaning the house, and just laying around the house and stayed put. I use a Turbie every time I wash my hair and leave it on while I do my make up and get dressed.
While the towel is not as thick and absorbent as my bath towels or super absorbent hair towels, it soaks up moisture in the hair quite well and stays in place much better than a regular towel. I can't stand trying to wrap a huge bath towel around my head. It's too heavy and it always falls right off if I move my head any which way.
Turbies are really easy to travel with as they are compact and lightweight. I always pop one into my bag when I travel as I'm spoiled and don't want to be without them, and because I never get enough enough towels in hotel rooms.
Turbies are made from 100% cotton terry. The only issue I have with them is that the fabric of the newer towels seems to be thinner and made from a looser weave than the older ones. Also, the elastic loops in the back sometimes come loose or fall off with frequent use and require mending.
