Decent push mower, stands up to heavy use

Comments about Troy-Bilt 5.5-HP Honda 3-in-1 Push Mower:

My husband and I have a large yard (5.5 acres, 3 of which we mow on a regular basis from April to early November). Since purchasing the property in 2009, we are on our third push mower. The other two both had several mechanical failures before we stopped repairing them and just threw them out. We live in a relatively rural area of Pennsylvania, so the land tends to be hilly and the terrain is uneven. In addition, our yard contains a number of large mature oak and maple trees which have extensive root systems that frequently protrude from the ground. We purchased this Troy Bilt mower in 2012 and specifically made sure to choose a mower with a Honda engine. In the past we have owned 2-3 push mowers with Briggs-Stratton engines and they just do not last. This push mower has been used 2-3 times a month for the last several years and is holding up very well. I actually do the majority of the push mowing myself (it is GREAT exercise!) and have found this to be a sturdy mower with solid performance. It handles the bumpy terrain/tree roots without issue. It mulches well (we do not collect grass clippings; 3 acres of grass clippings six months a year would bury us). It starts for me with a single pull of the cord - and although I am a woman in better than average shape, I know my upper body strength is not equivalent to my husband's. We have not had to replace a single part or deal with any failures in the last 3 seasons and that is nothing short of remarkable compared to our past experiences with Craftsman machines.

Survived our crazy family for another summer

Comments about Troy-Bilt 5.5-HP Honda 3-in-1 Push Mower:

I have wanted to review this poor little lawn mower since I started writing reviews on this site since it is such a forgiving work horse but I just now got around to going outside and looking at the model number...honestly I did not even know the brand depsite the fact I have used this mower for the second summer...

We have a farily good sized extremely uneven yard full of toys, tree branches and mole holes.  The Dad of the house bought this to supplement the riding lawn mower,,which died within days of purchasing this Troy Bilt push mower,  Well...he works ALOT and we have alot of children who NEED to be outside so I just started mowing the grass myself...then it just became my job since that was about the only 'exercise' I could get,,,this poor mower has had to not only deal with an incompetant operator...we left it outside UNCOVERED all winter (Okay...so I do live in the south but it snowed once this year :-) I have not changed the oil...I have run over rocks and Matchbox cars...IT STILL CRANKS pretty much on the first tug of the wire thing. It does shut off when it runs over something tough (we have some horrible vines) and you have to walk away for a while as it needs to calm down after the trauma...

Honestly...this summer it started on the FIRST pull...I know this winter we need to give it shelter and love on it a bit more so it will last long enough for the boys to grow up and cut the grass themselves...but in the mean time I have faith it can handle me for yet another summer!

We really don't need any major yard tool purchases in the near future...but when we do it will be a troy bilt.
