I run during the warm weather months to stay in shape, usually averaging 15-20 miles a week. To train for a marathon, I will need to up my miles. In the past, when I increased my mileage, I experienced problems typically associated with running - heel pain (plantar fasciitis) and knee pain (IT band syndrome.) I tried stretching and icing, but the pains persisted.
At the suggestion of folks at Running Away in Chicago, I purchased TriggerPoints (TP) Massage Total Package. (See picture)
The package consists of TP Massage Ball, Footballer (small roller), Quadballer (large roller in front) and Baller Block. These therapy tools use a patent-pending material that mimicked the pressure and accuracy of a thumb, and when used properly, they can simulate the therapeutic effects of deep tissue massages.
To relieve and prevent heel pain, I use the Massage Ball to stretch out the bottom of my feet, and the Footballer (on top of the Baller Block)to stretch out my calf. I use the Quadballer to stretch out my IT band (outside part of thigh.) I've used foam roller in the past to stretch out various parts of my legs, and I definitely could feel the difference using the TP tools. TP tools put more targeted pressure on the body, and seemed to do a much better job of penetrating and relaxing the various muscle groups.
Since I started using TP tools two months ago, I have not had any heel pains in the morning when I get out of bed, and my knees are holding up well. The tools do work, but the key is to use them consistently before and after training. My only complaint is the lack of good documentation. The package comes with a DVD that demonstrates the proper techniques in using the tools, but I rather have a manual that I can flip through versus watching the instructions on TV or computer.
