As a fan of the original series, I loved the movie. While the movie took some liberty with the back-story of the origins of the Transformers - i.e. what is their purpose on Earth, when did they arrive - it is largely true to the cartoon. The transform process was smooth. It was actually more believable to see the vehicles transform into humanoid forms in the movie than it was in the cartoon...I always wondered what happened to Prime's trailer when he transformed... The action scenes were well done, though it was sometimes hard to keep track of which figures were Autobots and which were Decepticons.
As a parent, I felt that some of the themes were a little above the heads of my children. The violence and sexual themes were not suitable for them. They have seen the cartoon, and were excited about seeing the movie, but after seeing it myself, I decided not to let them see it...yet.
I definitely recommend the movie for a PG-13 crowd. As a parent, I recommend viewing it for yourself before allowing your younger children to see it. You might find it to be acceptable for them.
