Transformers was one of my childhood favorites; I had all the action figures, even Sam and Mikaela. I first heard about this movie while watching Clerks 2 but, I thought it was just something thrown in the movie for dialog and humor. I did a little checking and sure enough, there was a live action Transformers movie in the works. I was excited to say the least.
Plot: A civilization of robots are searching the galaxy for something called the All Spark. The All Spark can rebuild their civilization and return it to its former glory and it just so happens that it crashed landed on the Earth. The good hearted Autobots want to use the All Spark for good, and create a civilization in which they can live in peace. The Decepticons, however, want to use it to turn all of Earth's machinery against them, taking over the Earth to rule as their own. When they finally find who has the coordinates of the All Spark, the battle between good and evil begins leaving Earth hanging in the balance.
I have just one word to summarize this movie: Wow. I'm overly impressed by this movie, not only because it's a live action Transformers movie but, because of how well it was done. Shia LaBeouf(Sam Witwicky) performs amazingly and is actually very funny in his role. Megan Fox(Mikaela Banes) is not only smoking hot but, also a great actor and she really supports Shia well. Tyrese Gibson, Josh Duhamel, Anthony Anderson, Jon Voight, Rachael Taylor, and Jon Turturro all play their roles perfectly. But, this movie is so much more than just great acting.
The CGI(Computer Generated Images) is as good as I have ever seen in a movie. I almost want to say that it's yet another leap in movie making technology. The only time I knew I was watching CGI was when the movie ended and my friend remarked on how good it was. The action scenes were very well directed and I believe that this movie will really be the gem of Michael Bay's career. The score for this movie was assembled to perfection, mixing in new age songs with older classics along with ochestral music that adds a nice effect to the non action scenes. During the Transformer fight scenes there's no music, just the sounds of missiles and machinery. It really, really adds a nice touch and helps increase the pure adrenaline of the action.
There are two scenes in Transformers that the audience really responded to and that gives you that feeling of "Yes, this is what I've been waiting for. This is what I wanted." The first is when Optimus Prime and the rest of the Autobots reveal themselves to Sam and Mikaela for the first time. The audience begin hooting and hollering with excitement at finally seeing them all. Also one of the funniest lines in the entire movie is during this scene. The second is when you finally see the entire group of Decepticons racing towards the Autobots location. The audience went absolutely nuts when Starscream, Blackout, and the rest of the Decepticons announced themselves.
If there were anything bad to say about this movie it would be that it may feel a little long to some people. I could see the audience getting restless right before the final fight scene.
**Ending Spoiler**
The final fight between Megatron and Optimus Prime was the only let down of the entire movie. Well, more of a semi let down as it didn't ruin the ending in any way. I was expecting some type of grandiose battle, something that really captured the fight that was going on between good and evil. What I got was: hit, hit, hit, hit, explosion, hit, explosion, All Spark to the chest, game over. So, it wasn't terrible or even close to bad, it just felt like there should have been something more.
**End of Spoiler**
Overall, Transformers is a well rounded, hilarious action movie with great acting, amazing CGI, and is a great adaptation of the cartoon. I highly, highly, suggest seeing this because it will be the summer blockbuster to see, and it will be a long time before people stop talking about it.
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Runtime: 2 hours 24 minutes
Rating(out of 10): 9.4
Side Note: Even though this movie is rated PG-13, there is quite a bit of swearing and some adult subjects are talked about. So I'd keep it to ages 14-15 and above.
