I have young children, but I also have older children too (ages 14 and 21). The release of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen caused untold begging and pleading so much so that I actually attempted the first showing available at Midnight opening day, with my teenage daughter.  Of course, it was sold out, but that didn't stop us.

If you dislike spoilers, I will try my best not to give away too much but you may want to read no more. If you are deciding whether or not to take your children please keep reading.

Transformers Revenge of the Fallen was nothing if not action packed!  Action, action and more action.  Incredible special effects.  Our old favorites of Megatron and Bumble Bee return, and of course the return of the Decepticons, to continue the battle for control of Earth.  Sam (Shia Labeouf) and girlfriend (Megan Fox) return as our "heroes" of the story who are also experiencing typical boyfriend/girlfriend conflicts such as Sam's attending college and who will say the "L" word first.

What I liked about Transformers Revenge of the Fallen

  • action packed
  • relationships between humans and aliens
  • the military unit of the "NEST" amazingly acted and horribly underappreciated.
  • the jerk politician (annoying but so completely in character you can't fault it)
  • the scenery (much of the story is "set" in the pyramids of Egypt) and it was amazing and beautiful - real or fake didn't matter
What I didn't like about Transformers Revenge of the Fallen
  • the "transformation" of the Decipticons - I remember the Decipitcon toys and characters of old.  These were transformed into monstorously evil, wicked creatures in vocals, design and appearance. Think a cross between the Predator, Aliens and then the size of the bots.
  • the graphic nature of many of the scenes-the fight scenes were incredible however at many points the graphic nature was even surprising to my 14 yr old I can only imagine how a 4 yr old would feel.
  • Sam's mother on the college campus - while I was amused by the "it's my free day I can eat what I want comment" as she shoveled a pot brownie down her throat I could have done without the following scenes as she becomes "Mom's gone wild" on the college campus.
  • the so called story line - I really didn't understand some of what was going on until about half way through the movie when an "ancient" decided to give us the background.  Overall it was just very poorly written, I think the same information could have been entertaining and informative
  • sexual situation- don't get me wrong, I am not a prude, but did I really need that many shots of the dogs humping each other, then all the rear end shots of the female characters, AND a machine leg humping Megan Fox?  Or the mettalic tale and toungue of the sexy college co-ed attacking Sam in his dorm room.  Some was funny, but it went way too far.
My Viewpoint: Overall, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen was good. It really could have been great! Amazing! And watchers COULD have walked out saying they have never seen anything like it before. However, poor writing, graphic content, sexual situations, and the scariness of many of the scenes and characters makes this a good movie to go see, but definitely not a movie for children.

Would I recommend - to a friend who wanted to take a child over 10 - my teenager actually recommends 12 and over.

So there you have it - the girls viewpoint.

For a great movie review on this topic read this review about Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen - Too much style, not enough substance.

My nephew will be 15 at the end of the month and he is wanting to see it. He wanted Auntie to take him to see it at the drive-in IF they get to stay with me Thursday. I got out of that easily because the drive-in isn't open on Thursdays so we may be headed to the $1.50 cinema.

Good info Lisa... still want to go. I had a friend who took his 7.5 yr old. He said that his son wasn't having nightmares about the action... but about the kissing. I figured the sexual stuff must have been more in this one after that. My son liked the first one... we may steer clear of this one for quite a while.
