In a last-minute campaign to use up as many offers as we can before our Entertainment Books expire, my friends and I dined at The Golden Wok the other night. I ordered some sort of scrumptious dish which was like Oriental pot roast loaded with cooked green pepper, tomatoes, and rich brown gravy served with rice. We couldn't finish our dinners off (even after sharing a little with each other) so we emerged triumphant with sacks of leftovers. Afterward, we stopped off at the new Trader Joe's in Oak Park on the way home.
As usual, I hardly knew what to grab first at that wonderful store but I was still thinking in an Oriental mode as I snatched packages of frozen Jasmine and also Brown Organic Rices, following up with taking a chance on Trader Ming's Stir Fry Vegetable Egg Rolls. This product consisted of five apparently hand-made full-sized rolls which cost $2.99 and they were worth every penny.
These look like regular egg rolls but instead of meat, they sport a filling of shredded or chopped vegetables including: Tofu, bean sprouts, carrots, mushrooms, onion, Chinese celery, chives, green onion, garlic, salt, sugar and soy sauce. This was a delicious Asian-style appetizer and I especially loved that the rolls were crunchy in a tender, moist easy-to-eat way.
STATS:
One roll is considered to be a single serving containing 110 calories with 35 calories from fat. There are 4 grams Total Fat, half a gram Saturated Fat, zero Trans and Cholesterol, 370 mg. Sodium, 16 grams Total Carbs, 2 grams each Dietary Fiber and Sugars, and 5 grams Protein. Also included are 30% (D.V.) Vitamin A, 8% each Vitamin C and Iron, and 6% Calcium.
TASTE TIP:
Instructions are provided for warming in a conventional oven but I found that Trader Ming's Stir Fried Vegetable Egg Rolls heated up beautifully in two minutes in my microwave. A little determined searching through my fridge located a half a bottle of sweet and sour sauce. A generous dash of that turned out to be a perfect condiment for these delightful egg rolls.
