Trader Joe's Chicken Fried Rice

It's decent.

Trader Joe's Chicken Fried Rice is a decent option if you're looking to throw together a quick meal. I feel like it is bland by itself, so I always add in a few more ingredients, such as meat or more veggies! It tastes really good with additives and if you served it to guests they'd never guess it wasn't homemade. Trader Joe's makes my meal planning super easy!

Tasted plastic-y

1

I had read a good review of Trader Joe's Chicken Fried Rice on a food blog, and it sounded like a good quick meal for me, so I decided to pick it up from TJ's the last time I went. I prepared a small amount of the fried rice in a saucepan, following the relevant instructions on the package. I could tell pretty quickly that something was wrong, because the smell coming from the pan was not very good. I still cooked it thoroughly, and finally took a bite. It was terrible. It tasted just the way it smelled, which was plasticy and not food-like at all. It was disappointing and meant I had to find a different dinner that night. Of course, due to Trader Joe's great return policy, I came back the next time with my almost-full bag of fried rice and returned it for a full refund. Since I've seen so many good reviews of this product, I think I must have just gotten a bad bag. I'd like to try it again, but I'm nervous to buy another bag.

I wanted to like this, but I just didn't.

Our family loves fried rice, and I love Trader Joe's, so I was hoping the two would be a great combination. However, this dish fell short. Overall, the fried rice didn't have a lot of taste, which was disappointing. Additionally, it did not have a lot of chicken. What chicken there was seemed to be mostly dark meat and of a poor quality. The meat also had a rather greasy taste. I guess the plus side would be that it was easy and fast to prepare. However, for me that did not overrule the negative. I don't know if Trader Joe's also makes a vegetarian version of its fried rice. If so, I would be willing to try that and add my own chicken, as well as some soy and chili sauce.

Strange Taste and Smell But Good Value

2

I have no idea if something "went wrong" with my experience, but I was disappointed by this product. It has a peculiar "burned" or "smoke" smell and taste that makes it inedible for me. I microwaved it, so there should not have been any possibility of the rice actually being burned, and I did not add anything to it. Overall very weird. I'm reluctant to try it again to find out if this was a fluke. It is, however, very easy to prepare, and the mixture of ingredients seems to be good. The chicken is not too skimpy, and it was of good quality. It would work equally well as a main meal, or as a side. There's plenty in the bag for 2-3 people, even 4 if nobody wanted a whole lot of it. The value for the money is good.

One of my kids' favorite meals!

I am into healthy food, but I am not a cook.   I want things that are easy, affordable, healthy and that my kids will eat.  Anything that has the Trader Joe's lable they will eat, but they especially love the Chicken Fried Rice - and I like it cause it's easy to make and it's "cleaner" then getting it from a resteraunt where they are adding ingredients and MSG.
