Have trouble falling asleep?  So do I.  And staying asleep?  Not too good in that department either.  What to do?

I've tried several sleep aids over the years, from the antihistamine over the counter variety to the prescription only sleeping pills.  They all seem to work to different extents but each seems to have its own drawbacks.

The antihistamine variety, such as Unisom, get me sleepy quickly but tend to dry out my nasal passages to such a degree I sometimes wake with a dry sore throat.

The prescription medications all seem to have a risk of being habit forming.  I'm aware that some of the newer prescription sleep aids are said to be non-habit forming, but they tend to be wallet-depleting.

Of all the different types of sleep aids I've tried, Melatonin, seems to be the safest, most effective, and by far the least costly means for me to get a good night's sleep.

What is it?

Melatonin is a natural hormone produced by the pineal gland, a gland about the size of a pea, that is located in the center of the brain.

It is believed that melatonin is responsible for regulating our biological clock.  As production is increased our bodies react as if it's night-time and prepare themselves for sleep.  In doses of 3 - 5 mg, sleep occurs fairly quickly.  At the higher end of this range REM sleep is induced and it's not unusual to experience vivid deams.  But recent research suggests that at these dosages the brain quickly catches on that it's being tricked by externally supplied melatonin and it adapts, rendering  these large doses unreliable.

It is now thought that dosages of between .3 - .5 mg are more effective at consistently bringing on the sleep state.

Trader Darwin's Chewable Peppermint Flavored Melatonin

Melatonin is available in several different pill forms.  My preference is in a chewable tablet.  That's where Trader Darwin's Chewable Peppermint Flavored Melatonin comes in.  It's a very pleasant tasting tablet that can be chewed or placed under the tongue.  Taken in this way it works very quickly, so make sure you're prepared to go to sleep.

Each pill contains 500mcg. (.5mg) of melatonin.  One tablet is all you should need.

Trader Darwin's Chewable Peppermint Flavored Melatonin is sold exclusively by Trader Joe's and cost approximately $5.00 for a bottle of 100.

My Viewpoint

When sleep can be had so safely and inexpensively this sleep aid is really worth a try.  For those of you who are long distance fliers, this product is an excellent aid for getting over jet lag.  I recommend it.

Now go get a good night's sleep.

Regards,

Rudi

I came online on a whim thinking I'd find something specifically on TJ's Chewable Melatonin tablets and can't believe I did! After doing my own research on melatonin itself I really appreciate the vote of confidence this review has given me. After all, what did I expect, I love TJ's :)

I love this supplement and it works quite well most of the time with just one tablet. The pleasant peppermint flavor is a bonus. The only problem is that I have to travel at least one hundred miles to the nearest Trader Joe's to buy it.

I humbly stand corrected.

The review in inaccurate. It would take 10 trader joes pills to obtain 5 milligrams. The dose is 500 mcg, which is .5 milligrams. http://www.sciencelab.com/data/conversion_calculators/metric-weight.shtml . Other brands have a 3 milligram dose.

it's actually 500 mcg. which means it's .5 mg and it still works great at that dose.

then again, melatonin is unregulated, so who knows how much is actually in it?

wow! I'm going to buy this stuff for my boyfriend. He spends most of the night awake...

I once fell asleep in the shower - standing up and leaning. I wish I could pass along some good sleep genes. I'm looking for "stay awake" herbs. But this is a great review.

I'm a terrible sleeper and have tried melatonin without much success, However, whatever works for you is great -- I completely understand the pleasure of getting a good night's rest.

Costco also sells melatonin at a good price, if you don't mind buying a 500-pill jar.
