I just want a cell phone, not a fancy doohickey.
5 star rating

cost-conscious, usually just making or receiving a call, not duct taped to my cell phone, simple is good, not into status, practical

Tracfone —

Reading an article in the newspaper about a simple cell phone made me realize how much my parents like the Tracfone. It is a prepaid plan with no yearly contracts or activation fees. First, you have to purchase the phone which can vary in brands and cost up to $60. Then you have to buy phone cards which range from $20-$80, depending on how many units are bought. The number of minutes are on the phone screen, and when they run low, you can buy another card which is available in most major stores like Walmart or Target. After buying the card, you have to call a number or go on a website to activate the minutes. The coverage is good, and we have to call from rural areas.

The phone is very basic with no extra features, but my parents just want a telephone to call with, not to email or text message. It is especially good for my mother when she is out alone. It is also good to have on vacations. My parents don't have a need for most high-tech products, but a cell phone has become a necessity in this day and age. How did we live without it?

I totally agree. I bought one for my 89 year old grandfather who is still really active and drives. It just makes me nervous that he didnt have a cell phone. Although, I should have bought a phone that has bigger buttons so that he can see them!
