Tracfone —

To the Point

My mom just wasn't using her cell phone so we canceled her service. Then she found herself one day without a phone. It was unplugged (don't ask!). I decided to buy her the Tracfone which my aunt also has and likes. This is a pay as you talk phone and perfect for my mom. I think it is perfect for young children who are not old enough to want to chat with their friends but want to call you for a ride or you want to find out when they will be done with soccer.

A Closer View

I bought the Tracfone at CVS for $10.00. I then bought a card which you will see in whatever store in which you go. The cards are for various amounts of time. I started out with a $20.00 card for 60 minutes. At the time my mom didn't quite understand and spent ½ hour on this phone!!

Yesterday I bought another card and got her another 60 minutes. It's great just for her to have so I can call her if she isn't in her room and vice versa.

The Features

  • There are no contracts. You will not have to sign anything with anyone.
  • You can text message but you will have to buy a card just for that purpose.
  • You'll have coverage around the country. The rate is the same wherever you are including over seas.
  • This is a small, lightweight phone weighing less than 3 ounces. My mom doesn't have to carry anything heavy or complex with her.
  • It has an alarm, hands free speaker and can handle 500 telephone numbers. The Tracfone has 20 ringtones, voicemail, call waiting and caller id. It also came
     with a battery charger.
  • The battery talk time is about 6 ½ hours and the standby time is about 2 weeks or so.
  • The Tracfone shows  on the clear display how many minutes are left which comes in very handy. My mom doesn't have to try to find it because she just would not be able to.
  • My mom's phone is not a flip phone so she doesn't have to worry about breaking a nail.
  • Her Tracfone is made by Motorola. There are other phones that are more expensive and do more but I wanted one as basic as one could be.
Other Information
  • Adding minutes is simple. Remember that you have already bought the card so you don't have to get out a credit card. All I do is call a 1 800 number and put in the pin number that has to be scratched off of the card. This can be done online as well.
  • Her Tracfone's numbers are small since the whole phone is small but she can manage. I added some phone numbers for her. The phone uses arrows to scroll up or down which for my mom is so much easier than a ball or any kind of navigation wheel. She has shaky hands and this works great.
  •  Note that there is a $20.00 service fee every three months. That is not clearly advertised.

Jo's Viewpoint

The Tracfone is perfect for my mom.

I noted no cons because I bought the Tracfone because it was lacking bells and whistles.

You know I am so tired of having to fight with everyone to get anything done. It is all so frustrating to be doing nothing wrong and then no having any customer support. I'm having a problem with Tripod as we speak.

BUYER BEWARE! My family has been using various models of Tracfone for years. Yes, it is much less expensive and there are no service contracts than other cellular services. However, Tracfone is the worst when it comes to customer service. The 1-800 number you call for Tracfone is in the Philippines and not very many representatives speak English very well. I had three inactive phones that I wanted to reactivate. I purchased three 60-minute airtime pins on their web site and discovered that they combined them all into one 180-minute pin. I called to explain the problem. The willingly walked me through the process of reactivating 2 of the 3 phones with 60 minutes each. However the third phone needed a new part (SIM card), which had to be mailed. They informed me that once the new part arrived to call them and they would then be able to reactivate the phone. In the meantime, the number two phone would not work. I called them about it and they walked me through the process of getting it working again. When the part for the number 3 phone finally arrived, I called Tracfone as instructed. They informed me that I would have to buy more airtime for the phone because they added the airtime to my number 2 phone and blamed me for the problem. I explained the problem to a supervisor and still got nowhere. I reversed the charges to my credit card and I'll never do business with Tracfone again!

I think this sounds like something my brother gave my dad to have on the road with him. Now he is always with one of the kids who all have cell phones so I don't think he really uses his anymore. ~Gigi

This sounds like a great idea! And a great deal!

Thanks for the link. Right now she seems happy with what she has and she has had to adjust to a lot of different things so changing her phone yet again isn't something I want to do. But perhaps in the future. Jo

You might look into buying your Mom a Tracfone with DMFL. You can get them for as little as $20.

Hi, a couple of things:

1. I don't think that the minutes and service fee are the same thing because on the display it says how many minutes left and also how many days there are until service. I am going to see my mom today and will double check and if the number of hours or minutes is the same as service then we'll know. Also she lives in a brick building where reception can be spotty but she gets great service with the Tracfone. I assume you've been to the site and looked for someone to talk with? I went to the site and found it lacking in info but I would think they must have a customer service person OR perhaps as I said this was Motorola maybe I would call Motorola with a question so maybe you should just call them and tell them you want to buy the phone but had ?s..just a though:) Jo

I have read a few different reviews on the Tracfone, and I'm almost convinced to get one. I live in a mountainous region and even with Verizon (which I now have) I don't always get good reception. The Tracfone sounds like the cost saving route I'm wanting to go in, but I haven't found anyone who knows if I'd get reception here or not.

Also, in my researching this phone I saw something about the $20 service fee. It was not very clear, and I kept wondering why it said there was no contract then. Also, since they have the $20 minute cards, I wondered if the service fee and the minute cards were the same thing.

Anyway, thanks to your review, it all makes sense now. Very well written.

It's nice to have an option other than the long-term contract plans. I'm glad to hear it's working for your mom. :)

I'm sick and tried of my Cingular service (now AT&T). We have been checking on different options. My grandmother has a Tracfone and she loves it. Thank you so much for this review. As soon as my contract with AT&T ends, I will be buying a tracfone. NO Contract, Yay! Great Review, Jo! ;-)

Yep! I love mine. Their cheap and NO CONTRACT. Terrific review.

Thanks for letting us know. The BOX says that it can be used Internationally ...sigh. I haven't taken it to Mexico. I hate when that happens. Jo

viewkgr wrote on Nov 18, 2008 at 5:24PM

I agree, Jo. I have used my Tracphone for several years now. The phone does not work overseas, though. It only works in the USA. Was recently in Mexico and had to call my voice mail from a landline phone in Mexico in order to get any messags. I still luv the phone and the low cost.
