Toyota Prius - 2004 Review Summary

If easy handling, great gas milage and style appeal to you, then our reviewers think that you will love the 2004 Toyota Prius. One practical buyer says that the Toyota Prius is "Cost-efficient, gas-efficient, well-designed and easy to drive". But that's not all, "the fact that it's surprisingly roomy cannot be stressed enough" says another reviewer, "we've put lots of luggage, bicycles, a drum kit, and furniture in the car to move, and it's performed flawlessly: the trunk space is quite roomy. The main complaint? The 2004 Toyota Prius has some significant blind spots, so be extra alert when changing lanes. Want to compare? Please do! We've got many more car reviews.

We bought this Prious with 5000 miles on it and took off the same day for a long weekend - drove NY to Michigan 4 adults comfortably.  We have driven this car to Texas, South Carolina and all over NY for a lot less than you would expect.  We get 47 - 49 mpg spring thru fall, about 43 -45 in the winter.  We live in the hilly country of the fingerlakes of NY.  I absolutely love this car, plan on driving it until it konks out - several yrs from now - and then buying another!  Lots of room inside, I ride in the backseat quite a bit while our teenager learns to drive with hubby in the front. ... read full review »

We bought our Prius to replace a 1990 Dodge Dakota truck, so there was a definte change in the type of driving.  I was driving 50 miles one way to work then, so the more than doubling in miles per gallon was noticed right away (gas was about 1.70/ gallon then).

The one aspect of the Prius that surprised me was its acceleration.  It's not a sports car, but it will get up and go much better than my truck with a bigger engine ever would.

There are two negatives we have with the Prius, but neither would stop us from buying another one.  First are the blind spots.  The combination of the rear view...

There's little to say about the 2004 Prius that hasn't already been said.  While the gas mileage is surely a plus, for me an even bigger plus is the almost-zero emissions this car puts out.  The fact that it's surprisingly roomy cannot be stressed enough: my family includes males of height 6'4", 6'6", and 6'9", and all four of us can fit comfortably into the Prius with legroom to spare.  We've put lots of luggage, bicycles, a drum kit, and furniture in the car to move, and it's performed flawlessly: the trunk space is quite roomy.  It has a fantastic turning radius, and once you've gotten used... read full review »

I love this car.  I have about 50,000 miles on it now, averaging 44 mpg in my hilly neighborhood and traffic light areas, may go to 53 mpg on hwy.

The car is big enough for the 2 of us and our 3 rather large dogs, plus luggage in the hatchback. Quite an attention getter as gas prices go up.

No mechanical problems so far.

I had to get rubber floor mats and a cover for the back seat to keep the dog fur off the light colored upholstery.

I can drive the Prius without feeling guilty since it has terrific gas mileage.

I have owned my Prius over almost five years and never looked back. I had to pay extra to get it, and sometimes it makes me ill to think about it, but over the years it really has been worth it as gas climbed to over $4 per gallon. The hybrid engine works great and I get about 45-50 mpg. The car drives just as well as a gas engine and over 65,000 miles, I have experienced zero problems (save the tape deck that stopped working a few months ago).

The interior is much bigger than you'd think and seats four adults comfortably and five in a pinch.

The Toyota Prius is a fabulous car. Cost-efficient, gas-efficient, well-designed and easy to drive. There is a wonderful remote entry and ignition that one can purchase, and it makes life so easy! I bought my car very nearly sight-unseen. I had never driven one and had only read about its operation and efficiency. I had to wait six weeks to get the car I chose, but it was well worth the wait. I'll never drive anything but a hybrid again and it will most likely be made by Toyota.

I've owned this car since 2004 and have gone over 35,000 miles so far. The only maintenance I've had so far is 3,000 mile oil changes. It is as comfortable as a Lexus LS400 that I owned, in fact I have even slept in it overnight. Very quick acceleration since both the gas and electric motors kick in when needed. Overall my gas mileage has averaged 49 with regular gas. Rear seats fold down for extra room and it has 4 doors and a hatchback.

the toyota prius is awesome when it comes to fuel economy there is no doubt in that. it does however lack in the looks department. i would rather get a few less mpg's and get a civic hybrid for the simple fact that it looks so much cooler. you cannot beat a car that gets over 60 miles per gallon when the cost of gas is as high as it is. if the car is re designed in the future i could definetly see myself buying one.

This car is great. It sips gas and it does pretty well on acceleration. The smart key is pretty neat, just leave it in your pocket and press the power button. Also, since this car is so hot, the resale value has only decreased by about $1000 per year.

It is a wonderful car for a small family. It is roomy, great room in the trunk with easy access for loading and unloading. The gas mileage is less than what is advertised and the seat material is very thin. Overall, great car!
