We bought our Prius to replace a 1990 Dodge Dakota truck, so there was a definte change in the type of driving.  I was driving 50 miles one way to work then, so the more than doubling in miles per gallon was noticed right away (gas was about 1.70/ gallon then).

The one aspect of the Prius that surprised me was its acceleration.  It's not a sports car, but it will get up and go much better than my truck with a bigger engine ever would.

There are two negatives we have with the Prius, but neither would stop us from buying another one.  First are the blind spots.  The combination of the rear view mirror and door frame (front window support) make it hard to see out that side.  We've had several near misses at four way stops where we looked, saw no one, and as we were pulling forward discovered someone else was already there.  Now that we are aware of it, we make sure to do a triple look before pulling out.  Also, the fabric has been pulling away from the center console, but I suspect that is partly because of how we open it.

We now have over 105,000 miles on the Prius.  Other than routine maintenance, we have not had to have it in the shop.  We will seriously consider a Prius for our next vehicle.  The only reason we may not get one is not the Prius' fault - we have four kids, so need a vehicle that will haul six passengers and the Prius only seats five people.
