I did a lot of shopping in the ~$18,000 price range, and I was unable to come up with any more attractive option than this model, so I bought it.
I've seen review from people who say it's "noisy at high speeds", but I would guess they're comparing it to luxury cars. I have no issue with its db levels. The same goes for comfort. It's stiffer riding than many large cars I've been in, but I prefer to feel the road a bit. It makes me feel safer to be more in contact with what I'm doing.
My beef about the gas pedal was something I took all the way to Toyota management. They advised that this was something related to the way they achieve the high gas mileage so it's not a defect and can't be fixed. That doesn't make it any less annoying. There seems to be no way to get the car moving from a dead stop without it jerking slightly.
My beef about the towing shackles is something many drivers might never find to be an issue. I carry my car on a flatbed trailer when I travel in my motor home, and that means I have to have a way to tie it down. There are two shackles in front -- which aren't big enough for normal hooks, so I had to get some adapters from the hardware store -- but in the back there is nothing at all. There are four tapped holes in the frame in the back, so I built a couple of transition plates that screw into two of the holes and then produce big holes where tow hooks can attach, but that's more hassle than I think a person should have to get involved with in a new car.
